One of the worst beaches in Britain?

Dover HarbourAn east Kent beach has been named the second least favourite in the country.

The beach in Dover Harbour came behind Blackpool's, which is the least popular.

It is part of a study which found two thirds of us would prefer to holiday abroad because we think beaches are cleaner overseas.

Environmentalist Alexandra Cousteau says holidaymakers don't expect the earth.

The beaches of Cornwall (32%) topped the list of beaches Brits would most like to visit, followed by Devon, Bournemouth, and then Brighton

Nearly a third of Brits have stopped visiting Northumberland, Cleveland and Durham beaches because they are dirty.

  • The news is the second blow for Dover in a matter of weeks. Last month the Lonely Planet Guide described the town as a 'rundown town with a depressing air of decay'. But are the experts right? Is the beach the second worst in Britain, and what about the town itself? Add your comments below, or join in our poll.

Have the local council been on here? Do a majority of people really think that Dover is great? While Dover has good infrastructure, potentially great housing stock, the town lacks investment and a clear vision for the future. Dover could be really something, but until the local powers that be provide vision and leadership that will attract outside investment it will remain a place to catch a ferry to somewhere else.
