PM praises Chatham people at Armed Forces Day

Picture Gallery

The Prime Minister congratulated and praised the people of Chatham for the way they served this nation over many years at the first annual Armed Forces Day in the historic dockyard on Saturday.

"For centuries, in peace and war, Chatham has served our country.

"We owe an enormous debt to the community of Chatham, which has done more to the naval services of our country than anywhere else," he said, speaking 25 years after Margaret Thatcher's goverment closed the yards.

Tens of thousands turned the town into a colourful cavalcade to honour all the services.National Armed Forces Day at Chatham's Historic Dockyard

The town had become the centre of the nation's tributes, led by the Duke of Gloucester and a host of ministers.

There was a special cheer - very loud and pointed - as a contingent of Gurkhas marched past the Prime Minister at the saluting base - and looked him stright in the eyes.

Later today Chatham will formally hand over the responsibility for staging the 2nd armed forces day in 12 months time to Cardiff, which had been pipped at the post for staging today's events.

During the afternoon the Battle of Britain memorial flight, the Red Arrows, and a host of marines, soldiers, parachutists and naval personnel will show off their skills to the crowds.

Armed Forces Day 2009 Chatham Dockyard

I was a participant in armed forces day as one of the air cadets. The day was amazing even though we did stand around for a long time lining the route! I shook hands with Gordon Brown and lined the Royal route, later I was part of the crowd control as all the parades from Chatham marched through the Dockyard and the Royal Marines Band stopped infront of all my friends and I and we were amazed at how well they played and how they looked after their uniforms. I was then dismissed for the rest of the day and was able to look round all the activities and have a bit of fun. Everything was amazing and the Sea Cadets really pout on a good show of all their activities and the RAF Police Dogs Units were amazing! It was nice to see how they all worked to help our country and other countries. Lastly I would like to say that Armed Forces Day is a really nice familt day out and I would like to thank everyone that went.

A poor day for elderly veterans - ruined by lack of transport to help them move around the 80 acres to enjoy exhibits. My 91 year old father - World War II Bomb Disposal Officer - was keen to attend with his wife. Our park/ride dropped at Pembroke requiring an impossible wheelchair push and walk to reach the main arena. We were recommended to a 'veterans area' with a big screen that didn't work. When we left, no staff knew where the exits were for wheelchairs. A wasted day.

It was a great day, a lot of things to do best ever, wasn't very pleased with the red arrows though, waited a long time for them to arrive just to find all they planned to do was fly over? thought they might have done their usual stunts for us, apart from that it was amazing, thanks to everyone who made it a great day

great day well done chatham. i was one of the standard bearers and felt very proud as we marched to the dockyard. the crowds were wonderful cheering and waving flags. i would also like to thank the unknown gentleman who brought me and my mates a drink in local pub while we sheltered from storm.
only grumble - as it was hot water should have been laid on for the vets.

Being an ex-serviceman myself 86-98 and being a Chatham resident, I was looking forward to the first National Armed Forces event with Chatham being the leading example to the nation. No water was provided to veterans or service personnel at muster points and none provided at the dockyard upon arrival! Disgraceful! Especially with the temperatures as they were. Indeed everyone had to 'fend for themselves'. The council did nothing to dress the town with pride and put Chatham on the map. Indeed the whole day in my opinion was an insult. Medway council and Chatham Historic Dockyard ... you should be hanging your heads in shame right now!

I enjoyed the Armed Forces Day march in Chatham I was one of the veterans that marched through Chatham today. I served in the Paras in the 70's and 80's and I am a local.

The applause and cheering for the whole route from the crowd was very emotional and I was very proud along with all the other servicemen to have been there and thought of so highly. The whole day was a success and I
I think the public need a special thank you also for their support. I am sure I speak for all Veterans when I say Medway peoples kindness was also a great asset to the town long may it continue.
