Lorry overturns at Cowstead Corner on Isle of Sheppey

Two people were injured after a lorry overturned at Cowstead Corner roundabout, Sheppeyby Hayley Robinson

Two people were taken to hospital after the lorry they were travelling in overturned in Kent.

The accident happened just after noon on Thursday when a heavy goods vehicle approaching the Sheppey Crossing from the Sheerness direction overturned on the roundabout at Cowstead Corner.

The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Essex, was taken by land ambulance to Medway Maritime Hospital suffering from chest injuries.

Travelling with him in the cab was his 60-year-old wife, who had to be cut from the cab by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

She was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

It is not thought either of the couple’s injuries are life-threatening.

Police patrols attended and closed the roundabout to traffic.

Although Sheppey-bound traffic is still - at 4pm - able to use the Sheppey Crossing, vehicles travelling towards Sittingbourne are being diverted over the Kingsferry Bridge.

It is expected that the roundabout will reopen later this afternoon once the vehicle has been recovered.
