Woman's body found in River Medway

Coastguard and police at Chatham Maritime Marina after a woman's body was discovered in the water

Coastguards have retrieved the body of a woman from the River Medway.

They were called just after 7am Sunday after a fisherman reported a body in water close to The Command House pub, Chatham.

Coastguards removed it from the river at Chatham Maritime Marina. Kent Police were also at the scene.

A Sheerness lifeboat was launched but turned back once it was clear it was no longer needed.

Police believe the woman is in her 50s. No formal identification has taken place yet, although the coroner has been informed.

It is thought the body was in the water for less than 24 hours. The death is not being treated as suspicious.
