Boris Johnson to release study into Thames Estuary airport off Sheerness

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is set to release the first part of a feasibility study into his proposed £40bn airport off Sheerness.

The study, which has been undertaken by the engineer behind Hong Kong's offshore airport, will look at any major hurdles that could prevent construction.

Plans for the project includes two man-made islands with four runways built two miles off Sheerness seafront.

It would operate around the clock and include a new high speed train link which would whisk passengers to London and the continent and improved ferry and motorway links.

The vision is that the new airport would solve overcrowding at Heathrow.

The idea of an island airport has been universally condemned in Kent, with politicians from all parties and local councils and environmental groups saying it is a non-starter.

Mr Johnson is at odds with his own party’s policy on aviation, which sets out an expansion of regional airport capacity using high-speed rail links to cities.

Boris JohnsonKent County Council says it would prefer to see greater use of Manston Airport in Thanet.

Airport operator BAA has apparently questioned where the money would come from but according to the mayor’s deputy Kit Malthouse, oil rich countries in the Gulf and the Chinese government have expressed an interest in providing financial backing for the project.

A spokesman for the mayor’s office said: “Kit Malthouse made the comments during the Tory party conference.

“There has been interest from all quarters and from different parts of the world but it’s irrelevant at the moment as we are waiting for the feasibility study from Doug Oakervee to come out.

“Nothing is definite at the moment.  It is not definite that it can be done or that we would want to do it but there’s a lot of interest in the idea.  At this stage the most important thing is the feasibility study.”

The Kent Green Party says the airport should not happen because there are too many “practical problems”.

Spokesman Steve Dawe said: “The estuary airport idea of Boris Johnson’s has many practical problems.

“These include: The London Array wind turbines and concerns about impacts on bird life, and the noise 'footprint’ of circling aircraft over the whole of north west Kent from Dartford to Faversham.

“Domestic tourism and rail travel to the continent can substitute for flights, helping to boost UK tourism revenues. "

Kent Green Party wants Rochester, Manston and Lydd airports converted to other leisure uses to support domestic tourism, not international flights.

Protesters are currently trying to stop Manston expanding due to the noise pollution of 747s taking off and landing over Ramsgate every day. The airport operator wants the council to agree to allowing nights flights now - which is totally unacceptable. The beauty of Boris's plan is no one will be disturbed by the increased noise so has got to be worth while looking in to.

I think Boris is great, however this is the most luducrious idea i`ve heard for a long time, Manston has one off the longest runways in the country and is up and running, and the area needs the work, this will have a huge impact on the enviroment and also just to throw a joker in what about the Montgomery packed full of munitions and what has seeped out of it during the last 60 yrs, come on Boris please give us credit and run London as you were voted in to do and not Kent

    Go Boris!

Compared to a bigger Heathrow? This is a great idea that is certainly worth the feasibility study. How big do the Greens think the wind turbines are?

Alongside the RSPB we are wholly opposed to the construction of an airport anywhere in the Thames Estuary because of the immense damage it would cause to the area’s internationally important wildlife and the wider environment.
The whole issue was exhaustively investigated between 2002 and 2005 in the Government’s Aviation White Paper. All the key players, including the aviation industry, contributed. An airport in the Thames Estuary (not just at Cliffe) was conclusively ruled out and this decision upheld by the High Court. In addition to the unprecedented environmental damage and the resulting massive legal implications, the investigation found that an estuary airport did not make sense economically, would not meet the requirements of the aviation industry and presented a significantly higher risk of ‘birdstrike’ than at any other major airport in the UK.
What Boris Johnson and Kit Malthouse are proposing is environmental vandalism on a grand scale!

This man is really out of his depth in this matter,I hope the London ratepayers are noting how he is wasting their taxes. You don't need a highly paid engineer to tell you whether it's a starter or not. Any one with common sense could give you the answer. No !!!! For starters what authority does he have in this area, it would be interesting to know. I don't know how accurate your maps are attached to this article but it appears to put the landward side in Kent in the area of Warden Point which isn't anywhere near Sheerness. A figure for building this "fairytale" is £40 billion, you can double that, whoever gets an estimate of this magnitude anywhere near correct ?? I would suggest that there is already enough water borne traffic in this area, including the countries largest LNG terminal, to preclude such a "folly" as this. I predict that, god forbid, this ever gets the go ahead anybody reading this will be "pushing up daises" by the time it's finished.
