Much-loved Marcus meets his destiny

Andrea Charman and one of Lydd Primary School's lambsMarcus the lamb is dead.

Reared at Lydd primary school and much loved by the children there, he found himself the subject of a campaign to save him after it emerged he was due to be slaughtered.

The plight of the six-month-old lamb attracted media attention when word spread that he was to be killed as part of the school's attempts to educate pupils about farming.

The idea was that a raffle would see two people win freezer packs of lamb, with the money raised used by the school to buy more animals for the children.

But angry animal lovers have voiced their concerns, resutling in national headlines, TV coverage and a Facebook campaign.

TV star and Aldington resident Paul O'Grady told the BBC he would be happy to take charge of Marcus and a farmer from Brentwood in Essex e-mailed the school offering the sheep a safe haven.

But head teacher Andrea Charman was adamant that the school's original plan, backed she says by pupils and staff, would go ahead.

Mrs Charman said: "The decision to send the lamb for meat, which has the support of the school council and staff, the governing body and the majority of parents, has now been carried out.

“When we started the farm in spring 2009, the aim was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that implies.

"The children have had a range of opportunities to discuss this issue, both in terms of the food cycle and the ethical aspect.

"There is overwhelming support for the school, locally and further afield.

"It is important for everyone to move on from this issue, so the children can focus on their education.”

Strange Head teacher obviously with a heart of stone. I believe that if you have no compassion for animals you will have no compassion for mankind especially children. I wouldn't have my children in that school.

I think this story is shocking. I fully understand teaching children the food chain, and where our food comes from, but to name the animal and call it a pet, and then slaughter it is incredible. We don't kill our pets!

I find it hard to believe that the pupils voted in favour of the slaughter, personally,i suspect that they were brainwashed!

    Marcus such a shame

I fully understand the need for children to understand where meat comes from the that animals have to be slaughtered. but to
rear and pet them like they did to Marcus beggers belief. Take the children to a farm to understand the need to kill animals for their meat and skin. How can Yr2 childen understand the meaning of slaughter. Shame of the Headmistress.

I agree entirely with some of the other comments if Andrea Charman wanted her pupils to be educated in the food chain then she and those children involved should have been made to watch the full sordid slaughter. Not many of them would have been so keen then!I cannot help feel that the number of children she said wanted the slaughter was alot lower than she says and that those that did were encouraged by her obvious enthusiasm. All she has done has encouraged children to get rid of one pet for another, ie now its a dog lets dump that for a puppy.Thoroughly irresponsible I hope and pray she loses her job and is not allowed to have any more animals.
The woman is obviously not doing whats best for the school or she would have accepted the £500 someone offered.
Thank goodness some of the parents were brave enough to let others know what was happening.
I do agree its a farm animal but it was never treated as one.It should have been running in a field not penned in a playground

I really find it difficult to believe that this sorry act had the support of the majority of parents - why didn't Andrea Charman go the whole way and force her pupils to watch the slaughter if the "plan was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that it implies".

    Shame on all involved !

    Slaughter of Marcus

The Romney Marsh is one of the largest sheep breeding areas of the country. Children would have to pass fields of sheep everyday on their way to school. Why for heavens sake does the school have to keep them as pets, when I am sure a local farmer would be pleased to invite children onto his farm a few times a year to watch the progress of sheep farming.
I think the actions of this school is diabolical. To allow the slaughter of this animal after it was proven it would upset many children is unforgivable. If I had a child at Lydd school, I would be very tempted to move them to another school. I find the actions of the headmistress very concerning.

Seriously KM, where’s the balance in this story? And more importantly why are you focusing on such a non story? I'm fully behind the head teacher - this project is great news in the face of commercialisation – do we really want our kids thinking that meat simply comes from the supermarket?

Iappreciate that the pupils are being taught about the food chain etc,but to let them `humanise` e.g give him a name and bottle-feed him, letting him attend assemblies etc,and then to graphically show them what is going to happen to him, just beggars belief!!! For an adult even,to lose a pet is heartbreaking, let alone children! And to line them up to say their goodbyes,is just so awful!I think that she should be sacked. I sincerely hope that she gets her comeuppance!
