Geoff Clark's sudden departure from BBC South East leaves colleagues shocked

“My boss has told me to go so I’m going.”

With those few words, and thanks to viewers and colleagues, regional television giant Geoff Clark bowed out of BBC South East on Thursday night.

Last night’s broadcast provoked a further outcry from viewers, with many saying they will no longer watch the programme and switch to its rival news show ITV Meridian Tonight.

The man credited with transforming a ratings disaster into a flagship news show watched by more viewers than rival ITV Meridian Tonight made his final broadcast without his usual colleague Beverley Thompson by his side. She had left in tears 24 hours earlier .

He was joined instead by Natalie Graham. After Clark made his parting comment - “As Beverley said last night, that’s it. It really is it from me” - she gestured towards him, and without looking to camera, said: “Thank you Geoff. Goodbye.”

It was perhaps a sign of colleagues’ affection for the experienced anchors and anger at management’s shock decision to oust them six weeks earlier than expected.

BBC presenter Beverley ThompsonDespite a lengthy campaign by viewers and MPs, the BBC ignored the protests and pressed ahead with a decision that appears to have won little public support.

In a comment just before Clark’s final show, the BBC hailed the pair as “excellent journalists” which makes the decision even more bewildering.

It added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for their commitment and hard work on the programme and we know they will be missed.”

After Clark’s final broadcast, viewers expressed further outrage to Kent Online.

Lea wrote: “I think it is absolutely disgusting the way in which these two wonderful presenters have been treated. My husband and I won’t bother watching BBC South East Today again.”

Sally Russell said: “I am very sad to see Geoff and Beverley will no longer be presenting South East Today. I have met Geoff and he is a lovely genuine man. He and Beverley make a really good team. They will be missed. Meridian here I come.”

Edwin and Beryl Stiles accused the BBC of a ridiculous decision. “We will no longer watch the BBC News and will view the Meridian News in the future.”

Martin Jackson, a respected Kent-based media commentator, this month  called the BBC “bonkers” for the decision.

With Clark and Thompson gone, bosses will be looking anxiously at the ratings to see if their gamble has paid off.

As someone familiar with the situation said: “Managers have staked their own jobs on this change because if in six or 12 months time things have got worse, I think their positions will be untenable.”

I had occasion last week to send an email to the programme (for the very first time)after Polly mispronounced Wrotham Heath as "ROTHAM" instead of its correct pronunciation of "ROOT-HAM" in a local news item.

Surely the people who present local news could at least take the time to aquaint themselves with local place names and pronunciations.

I did receive an email response last week from the Beeb in which I was thanked for the information, but no mention or correction (to my knowledge) has been included in the programme.

Clearly there are mixed views about the departure of Geoff & Bev, with the majority of comments regretting their demise. Personally, like others, I followed Geoff from ITV and now regret his departure but I cannot say the same for his partner, who frequently had the appearance of an unmade bed. For ages I've wished to see Bev replaced by one of Ceri, Polly, Natalie or Linda, who all seem to be brighter and more straightforward in their presentation: Bev always seemed to lean with too much personal bias to some topics. As for the weather - what a variety of presenters we have and I hope we will keep. The quirky 'new age' dresser, Kaddy; the exuberant Naz; the "it's great today but doom (with a smile) is on the way" Kaye; and I saw him again today, so he hasn't gone yet, "I'll never live it down" hurricane-Fish.
Anyway, no one's dead, so don't get your knickers in too much of a twist. Very best wishes and good luck to them all, leavers & stayers, from one 72-yr-old licence-payer - like the rest of you.

One more boring story about her "Dad", "Mr George" (yes I kid you not) or her enfant terrible and I shall scream! She was brought in to boost the listening figures but the reverse has happened. As gorgeous as Polly is (most guys would agree) she and Rob will merely be another news team and not have that special rapport Geoff and Bev had. This is right up there with the axing of a certain judge from a dancing porgramme and replacing her with a singer!!!!

Sadly, owing to how incredibly poor the Meridian programme now is the BBC will keep many of its viewers purely down to this fact, and then gloat at how right they were. It is obvious the BBC must also think this, and with little or no regional news competition made this inexpainable decision.

"The team behind BBC South East Today have been listening to viewers and noting audience feedback since it first went on air. Beverly's move to become Laurie [Meyer]'s co-host is the first major new development in the show's format since the launch.
"Beverly is enormously popular with our viewers, who have been telling us they want to see more of her," explains Rod Beards, Editor, BBC South East Today."

    How times change, eh?

An object - indeed abject - lesson in how not to run an organisation. Bev'n'Geoff are better off outside the Beeb, not in it. I wish them well.

Come on people. Those two were pretty awful. Ive seen better turned out people working behind checkouts. An effort wouldnt have gone a miss. Its not just about being a good journo. Its 'presenting'. Something easier on the eye than those two would be great thanks.

The BBC had a winning formula in Geoff and Bev. They should regard the old adage, 'Don't fix it if it ain't broke'.

Nothing against the new SE Today presenters but I thinbk it a total disgrace that the BBC has, in effect, got rid of Bev & Geoff. The BBC ought to note the route followed by B & Q who are not afraid to emply "older" staff because they know they are more reliable and balanced when dealing with people.
I wish Bev & Geoff well in their future. They will be greatly missed.

People, people! No one's actually said they were "given the push because they're old". A journalist has put that random question to the BBC and it's been denied - thus creating this knee jerk reaction from you all.

Surely it is more likely, in these cost conscious times (and it is our money, after all) that the BBC could no longer afford such experienced, veteran talent as Geoff & Bev?

By letting them go it frees up funds to keep the high standard of reporting going and means the BBC news coverage won't be forced to sink to the awful levels of ITV's so-called "regional" coverage.

It's a shame because Geoff and Bev were an entertaining, charismatic couple, but once Rob and Polly are settled in, you'll soon forget about Geoff & Bev... something you probably won't do if you switch your loyalties to ITV and find Kent & Sussex news is a mere whisper of its BBC content.

Why, why do the BBC have to change anything that is successful. This partnership made the local news worth watching. As a Licence payer, I shall now be watching Meridian. Do you think that I can get a refund on my Licence? I doubt it. As suggested, I think the head honcho's at the BBC should think long & hard before they again ignore public opinion. We pay for their fat cat salaries, so surely in a democracy we should have a say, and be listened to.

These two were two of the main reason to watch BBC, they had Kent and Sussex at their hearts. The other TV channel tells us all about Hampshire etc. When will the Beeb realise they have lost two of their best assets. Good luck Geoff & Bev, but don't go to Meridian they are not regional.

Pleasant though Rob and Polly are the BBC is making a big mistake. By aiming at a younger audience they seem to forget the age of the majority of the population. As one of your commentators suggested, I'll vote with my remote and switch to ITV or Sky news. Unfortunately should the Beeb do a 'U' turn I won't be watching to find out.

Why can't somebody tell us the people responsible for this outrage. The BBC is getting more like an arm of the government every day, no one takes responsibilty for anything. If the viewing figures go down the Beeb will come out with some form of guff to try and placate us. Perhaps a "whistleblower" can be persuaded to tell us exactly what has gone on and why this has happened. What track record and what gravitas have the replacements ??

Perhaps a severe culling of the BBC management would have been preferable and more cost effective than sacking two excellent and popular presenters. I will be watching the ITV equivalent in future.

    Good luck to them both

    Ageism?

Why is there this obsession with the idea that "younger is always better" for TV presenting jobs?

I'm a young at heart 30 year old and I enjoyed watching Bev and Geoff present the 'South-East Today' news programme because they were each very good at their own jobs and also had a great rapport with each other which came across on screen.
