Police at Dover Docks nab driver who replaced suspension with tennis balls

A driver who decided to save money by replacing his suspension springs with tennis balls has been fined.

The Opel Vectra was stopped at Dover’s Eastern Docks and inspection by Port of Dover police officers revealed the stack of balls where the springs should have been.

On September 4, the case was heard at Folkestone Magistrates Court and Rumen Petrov, 34, from London, was convicted in his absence for using a vehicle with equipment likely to cause danger or injury.

He was fined £350, ordered to pay £50 costs and a £15 victims surcharge. His licence was endorsed with three penalty points, and he was fined £175 for a lighting offence.

“Clearly the effectiveness of the vehicles suspension system had been significantly compromised and posed a very real risk to the driver, and other motorists,” said Inspector Neil Care.

“Petrov intended to drive to London and taking his vehicle off the road has no doubt contributed to road safety, not just within the port but throughout the south-east.”

Although i agree this is a stupid thing to do - his fine was cheaper than it would cost for a new suspension!!

I wouldnt mind a bet that Mr Rumen Petrov ignores the fine anyway, what a complete waste of time! And I wonder how funny people would have found it if this deathtrap of a car went out of control and ran straight through a bus stop full of school kids..I know he comes from London but do you really think if his name was Smith or Jones he would try such a potentially lethal stunt for the sake of a few quid?

Any mechanically competent person looking at that picture will see that the spring is still in place. The tennis balls were put there to act as extra resistance. Air assist balls have been used in suspension systems for many years. The worst thing likely to happen with this is that one or more balls pop if squeezed too hard. (unlikely they'll get as hard a time as they would at Wimbledon) - that would only return the car's suspension to its normal stiffness. No dramatic loss of control. No massacre of cuddly schoolkids. There might have been some real suspension fault, but there is no evidence of one in that picture.
