A carnival princess who was slapped with an Asbo for being badly behaved has vowed to turn her life around.

Rowdy Rachael Booker-Pook is banned from entering The Forum shopping centre in Sittingbourne High Street under the terms of the order.

And she must not be in a group greater than three people under the age of 21 which causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress in and around the town centre.

Kent Police released details of the two-year Asbo with DC Alan Beesley, of Sittingbourne police station, welcoming the order.

He said: "Over the last few months reports of anti-social behaviour in The Forum have increased and we were being contacted on a regular basis by local business owners and security staff who were fed up with the behaviour of a small group of young people."

But the 18-year-old says her troubled times are in the past now and Sittingbourne Carnival Association has vowed to stand by her after she was selected as one of two princesses on March 20.

West Street resident Rachael said: "I'm very grateful to the carnival association for standing by me and supporting me and I understand that if there is any trouble I won't get to keep the title.

"When I got the Asbo I was in with a bad crowd and I was going through some difficult times in my personal life.

"I'm trying to turn my life around. I'm starting an Open University course in June to study psychology and I hope to study public services at Mid Kent College in September.

"I'd like to become a criminal psychologist. I don't want to judge people, I want to understand them.

"I'm also looking for work. I'm trying my hardest. I want to move on from it all, have a fresh start, wipe the slate clean.

"I'm spending time with my family. I've changed so much, not only in my behaviour but the way I look, I'm taking a different approach to life.

"I'm trying to rebuild what I've lost and build on what I've got."

Sittingbourne Carnival Association chairman Pam Griggs said: "I found out about Rachael's Asbo after the selection process and invited her and her father to my house where we had a long discussion about it.

"She told me she wants to turn her life around and we're giving her a second chance.

"She's trying to put her all in to this, but she is aware that if there is any sign of trouble she is out. We've got to think of SCA's reputation.

"She can't enter The Forum but she has asked if she needs to (enter the centre for carnival duties) if she can do so wearing her sash and if she is accompanied by an escort from the association such as myself."

Rachael added: "People ask me how I ended up as a princess but it's judged on personality so I obviously had something that they liked.

"I really don't want to lose the title and I want to use this as a platform to turn my life around.

"I want to make it work and prove to everyone that I can make something of my life and achieve something."

From being a carnival queen in 2009, carnival makes you a better person. You learn to handle responsibility and the town's reputation. Rachael will benefit so much by being part of this family and i look forward to seeing her at future engagements. Yes, she regrets what she has done but dont we all have something we regret? No one is perfect. She is now giving something back to her town and we should all thank her for putting her time and effort into this. xxx

I think its crazy how we all moan about these kids but when they show they are trying to change, people still punish them!!! 'he who casts the first stone....' At least she is making a change so stop giving her a hard time and grow up like she has. These kids cant win either way!!! With support, its a phsychological fact that people will flourish. well done, proof that we can all change xxxxx

good on you rachael. I have known Rachael for many years and i think those who have made silly comments such as 'disgusted' are people who have no insight into real life. They are small minded and need a reality check. Everyone deserves a second chance and at the end of the day i cant think of anyone better than Rachael to prove the past is the past.

I have been a resident of this town for fifty years and I am absolutely disgusted that we are being represented by such a person. It just shows how low the town has sunk. I am not making quick judgements either, I have known of this person for some time and am well aware of her unsavoury history. I am with those who say that we should be represented by someone fit to hold the title.

I think everyone deserves a second chance. We don't know the inns and outs of it all, we all have an opinion on things. No-one in this world is perfect and no-one can say they haven't done anything wrong! We can't judge people on face 1st, maybe if we knew her and the inside details then we would be a bit more open minded. Yes she was wrong, but can't anyone see that she wants to make up for that? We should give her a chance to do this and prove to us all that maybe she isn't all bad and that some people aren't open minded and have nothing better to do then knock people down when they are trying to change their life, and make up for what bad they have done. I think it's very good that this SCA are standing by her and giving her a chance. Just proves they are better people. Also this goes to show, everyone makes mistakes, but if you want to, you can turn it all around for the better. Not everyone is all bad. Good on the SCA and Rachael.

how rude some of your contributors are. disparaging judgements of a personal nature are every bit as antisocial as annoying old frumps down at the shopping centre. unlike rachael, who has plainly seen the error of her former ways, you miserable whingers will still be sad tomorrow.

Words fail me, really. People deserve a second chance- God knows, I've had a few of them in my time.I'm puzzled by something though: a "princess" should possess a degree of pulchritude of which, compared to this part of the world, I see very little.
She herself stated "maybe it's because of my personality": sums it up really. I'm confident on my next trip back I could walk down Sittingbourne high street and find a young lady that fits both bills in 30 seconds flat- with no Asbo either!

"can't condemn them for eternity". This wasn't something that was done a long time ago. The idea is your punished for bad behaviour. Not once has she mentioned the word "sorry" to the peoples lives she's made miserable. It's just i'm going to do this and i'm going to do that. Perhap's if it was Jock she had been annoying he might not be as charitable. And as for we've all been there no we haven't. Some people do actually keep an eye on what their kids are doing before it get's to this stage. For an asbo it's not usually one incident.

We all make mistakes, or suffer a lack of judgement. As long as we learn from them and make a change. You cant condemn someone for eternity because they've had an asbo slapped on them. She was young, and foolish. We've all been there.

Hopefully this oppurtunity will allow her to move on and leave the past behind.

As a resident of Sittingbourne should we not be trying to raise the profile of the town instead of just accepting unruly behaviour as the norm.

I'm sure there were far more worthy candidates for the title.

whatever sounds like me,me,me,me,me. If she hadn't been given an asbo and named and shamed she would still be causing trouble. Maybe she should stop thinking about herself and start thinking about the people she has upset. I don't think they hand out asbos just like that so there was a history of serious behaviour. As for the SCA'S reputation classy. Asbo Queen
