Audio: Paul and Helen Crittenden make it to Mongolia

Paul and Helen Crittenden with their 16-year-old Land Rover Defender

A Ramsgate couple travelling around the world in a Land Rover for charity have made it to Outer Mongolia.

Paul and Helen Crittenden are on a mission to raise awareness among British children about the lives of children abroad.

Paul told our radio station kmfm how Outer Mongolia is very different to Ramsgate.

Every inch of the couple's 16-year-old "Landy", which was bought on eBay for just £6,500 but has since undergone some major modifications, was crammed with supplies at the Crittendens set sail on an LD Lines ferry bound for Ostend in June.

Paul and Helen hope their round-the-world trip will raise more than £6,000 for Water Aid, the Christina Noble Children's Foundation and Rainforest Concern.

Tim, everybody of course is entitled to their own opinion and invariably lives their life according to it. You ask "who cares if someone who is disabled makes an attempt to climb Everest?" I suspect that one person who cares very much is the disabled person who achieves their goal. It is not perhaps for you or I to judge their motivation against our own? Perhaps we should in all cases, allow people to make their own decisions and to make their own actions. In our own case, after eight months on the road, we feel more alive and inspired, have a fresher outlook on life, and have been able to make a positive difference to people in many places. Whilst we respect your point of view I wonder if your outlook is shaped on your own personal experiences, or on projecting your anxieties into our lives? You seem to make the assumption that we are intentionally endangering ourselves for egotistical purposes, which is simply not true, and we are doing everything we can to remain safe at all times. Our overriding experience is that everywhere we have been people have been kind, helpful and generous, and that overall the rest of the world is no more dangerous than our home country and not a place to be feared.

Sorry but i have no time for people who put themselves and others at risk by doing ridiculous things like going round the world into danger zones just so they can say they done it. We hear of those with no arms and no legs climbing Mount Everest. Why?? Who cares.
