Lydd school head Andrea Charman resigns following lamb slaughter row resigns

Andrea Charman with a lamb at Lydd Primary School

The head teacher of a Kent school at the centre of a row over a slaughtered lamb has resigned.

Lydd primary school’s Andrea Charman is stepping down at the end of this week for “personal reasons”.

It is believed she succumbed to pressure after online campaigns attacked her for pursuing the slaughter of Marcus the sheep back in September.

The anger over the decision to slaughter Marcus, who lived on the school farm, came from animal supporters around the world who logged onto Facebook and other websites to register their upset.

One website features almost 2,500 names.

Mrs Charman insisted that Marcus’ fate was supported by the school council and that it had always been the intention to cull the lamb as part of the children’s education over farming methods.

The above online petition features comments from across the UK and the US, as well as Denmark, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and France.

Its originator wrote: “We are not just protesting the mindless slaughter of Marcus.

“We are protesting the conduct and governance of Andrea Charman, the headmistress, who wishes to run her school like a farm and business. A school is a place of education, not a place of slaughter.”

One Facebook campaign, Save Marcus the Sheep, had 567 members.
The school will be led by an advisory head teacher, Penny Haynes, from February 22.

Only one lamb to the slaughter here...

    ...and it's poor Andrea Charman.
    These 'campaigners' make me sick.
Kids should know what goes on in the real world. What exactly are we protecting them from?
Yet again the ridiculous 'animal rights' choose to place the life of an animal that hes been bred, yes bred to be killed for human consumption above that of the life of a human being trying to teach our children important FACTS (and they are facts, whether you like it or not) about life.
Carry on wrapping your precious children in cotton wool and see where that gets you.
The faceless cyber bullys who did this to this woman ought to be absolutely ashamed of their actions.

please I do not wish for this woman to protect my children or grandchildren she had the perfect opportunity to explain to her child the ways of the countryside and the food chain. It is her who as brought a bad name to the town and not Ms Charman and in fact she has done a great diservice to the town in helping remove a dedicated and highly skilled headmistress from the town.

    What a joke

This is a joke, what Ms Charman did was admirable in trying to teach children where their food comes from and is something that every school should do. The majority of us eat meat and we need to be aware of what our food is, where it comes from. If there were more teachers like Ms Charman our agriculture industry would be a lot healthier, and I fully support her desicion to slaughter Marcus for meat. I'm only sorry that there are people out there who don't understand the link between animals and food. Marcus was far better reared than your packet of mince from tesco for £2.20 or your £3 for 2 chickens deals, and no one is forcing the heads of Tesco to resign over slaughtering animals.

    I think this is awful!

I am a vegatarian beacuse I couldn't kill an animal to eat it. But I respect people who will kill an animal to eat it. I really don't think you should eat meat unless you are happy with the life and death the animal has suffered to get on your plate. Meat comes from animals and in most cases the animals have had an apauling life. This animal has had a happy life at the school and the teacher was showing the children how meat is 'made'. This is a vauable lesson all children should learn. Just because you go to a supermarket and buy meat wrapped in plastic doesn't make it any different to the meat of marcus. Meat is a dead animal, always has been, always will be. If you don't like it become a vegatarian like me.
I think the parents who got involved In this hate campaign should be ashamed of themselves. The teacher was only showing the children something they are too naive to do themselves. Are they really that ignorant to the meat industry or are they just evil people who bully and ruin someones life just because it upset them.
This really makes my blood boil. My heart goes out to Ms Charman and the suffering she has been put through. Those parents are upset that a sheep has been hurt but spare no feelings for Ms Charman at the end of a hate campaign. They are awful people.

This is another step too far. All these do gooders and PC correctness mob now using social networking media to stop something that happens on farms up and down the country and which is part of everyday life is beyond comprehension.
To all those that complained - Get a life.
Right I'm off to have a rack of lamb ribs. hhmmmm

I wonder what this teaches children about the value of life.

Animals should be respected as fellow living, breathing, sentient creatures and not killed simply for 'educational purposes.'

Absolutely disgusting - sorry but I'm glad she will now have time to reflect on her views about her fellow creatures.

Grow up and think first before you over react

I think before people get to crittical of Andrea Charman, they need to understand how others live. Farmers have named cattle, sheep and other creatures but then told thier children they were eating said animal for dinner. And these kids grow up well adjusted. Because they have learnt from a young age this is normal.
This is the same for every child in life. If raised a certain way that is how they think. So why not try and teach children how others live and show them that in life we do humanly put creatures to death for our own consumption. This will make them well adjusted for is ahead of them on thier path of learning. And this also shows them how to be open and respect others views even if different to thier own. Whats even worse is that everyone as forgotten it was only one parent who had an issue, So why has every one forgot that the other parents choose to teach thier children some hard facts of life.
I wish teachers would teach more real life problems rather than turning our country into a nanny state where some peoples views and opions can be brushed aside by anyone who believs they are right.
Sorry to see an open minded person vindicated by the uneducated people who live in thier own little worlds.

    get real

its quite sad that internet campaigners who have nothing to do have to but drive a person out of her job-if she had had to resign through this campaign and not for any other reason- i don't think the principle of what Ms Charman did was wrong- the reaction to it with facebook is just sad indictment of modern society where we criticise others actions before looking at out own lives
