The KFC restaurant in Broadstairs was severely damaged by a fire which broke out on Saturday.

Around 15 firefighters went to the fast food outlet in Westwood Road at around 8am.

The fire started in the roof. Flames could be seen leaping from the building and a spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said they received a "flurry of calls" from shoppers and passers-by.

Eyewitnesses say the building has been completely gutted.

One of them who works at the nearby Asda store said: "They have had to cave the roof in but all the roads are accessible."

The cause of the fire is not yet know but investigators were due to arrive at the scene on Saturday afternoon.

The number of fire crews on site had been scaled back by early Saturday afternoon.

    You sure there, Spiderman?

'Thanet's finest eatery'? I do hope you're being sarcastic. Yes, I suppose KFC is at least edible, compared to the likes of McDonalds, but please, why don't you go to some real restaurants while you're deprived of the fried chicken? Thanet has a lot to offer.

    A local disaster

The loss of what is arguably Thanet's finest eatery is nothing short of a local disaster. Discerning diners from all over the Isle will be in mourning for a long time to come. We can only hope and pray it will rise from the ashes and be returned its former glory. If McDs think they'll be profiting from my custom in the wake of this disaster then they have another thing coming!

Thank god there was a fire at this restaurant. What a dreadful company this is - they have no regard for animal rights and treat their livestock disgustingly. Col. Sanders burn in hell.

No ... no one died! (yet) but as one of the founders of the "Filthy Friday", I am shocked to hear that some muppets have no idea what it is. I for one will miss the queuing on a friday, with that sweet, sweet smell filling my nasal cavaties, in readiness for the treat that is the K of the F of the C ... The Colonel can re-build his hut in my garden if he wants!

    Filthy Friday

I for one love the 'Filth' on a friday, and am one of many people who frequent the KFC @ Broadstairs.

I do agree with the comments from Tony and Ricky above about choice and the health of the nation. Seduced by this complex alchemy of health concerns, convenience and slick marketing, the great British consumer is now tucking into KFC's core product at a rate of 10 pieces of every minute. They are growing at a rate comparable to McDonald's. There is a huge growth in chicken because consumers consider white meat to be healthier.

Just what is Mr Ash-Gutteridge trying to say? Just by losing the fast food establishments is not going to turn around the health of the nation.
Those places turn out perfectly decent food that provided you eat in moderation are perfectly fine. If you ANYTHING to excess you will put on weight. They also provide jobs to dozens of people who would be out of work (not forgetting the poor staff of KFC Thanet who already are)

I simply do not get his reference to "Filthy Fridays" - it is obviously some personal saying/motto that the rest of planet Earth has no idea about

    Thanet get a healthy opportunity

    Excellent news!!!!

Finally the people of Thanet get a chance to break away from the filthy plague of obese style 'food' that these places pump out.

We just need the same to happen to McDonalds and Burger King now and we have a real chance of saving the kids!!!!

    Bye bye filthy Fridays!!!! :-)
