High speed future proving bright for east Kent

Government minister Jonathan Shaw has learned that the new high speed rail link has provided a 'quantum leap' for east Kent’s economy.

The Minister for the South East was told this when he met local business people in Folkestone on Thursday

Geoff Miles, businessman and chairman of the East Kent Local Strategic Partnership,. said: "High Speed 1 is a quantum leap for East Kent’s economy.

"It gives the area the fastest rail service in Britain, which will help our businesses open up new markets and become more productive.

"It’s now up to business and local and central government to show imagination and determination to insuring that High Speed 1 delivers long-term economic dividends for East Kent."

Mr Shaw, after a meeting with business people and senior council representative, said: "This new services present huge opportunities for East Kent, both for commuters and the economy, in terms of investment and tourism.

"It brings closer connections between the area and London and so further opens up East Kent for business. It makes the area more attractive for inward investment.

"This is the first stage of the Government’s wider plan to create high speed rail links across the whole county."

Mr Shaw met business people and leading figures, such as Shepway council leader and Robert Bliss and deputy leader David Monk at the Quarterhouse in Tontine Street.

He added: "Opportunities such as our meeting today are invaluable in helping me to really understand the issues people are facing so I can feed our unique South East perspective into the government’s decision making nationally."

The full high speed service, going from Dover, Folkestone and Ashford to London St Pancras, began last month.

The trains travel at 140mph and go from Ashford to London in 37 minutes.

    SRA told you so!

Medway MP's are not only to blame for the negative timetable change for Medway.
Medway councillors (more than anyone else) should have taken notice as to what the former Strategic Rail Authority advised them during the first consultation, a few years ago.
Put simply, the only viable HS service in north Kent would be as far as Gravesend - that situation has not changed since then. Note; more than a hundred and fifty passengers disembarked at Gravesend from the 16.25 ex London St Pancras - Faversham service.
Just 6 had disembarked at Ebbsfleet.
The SRA made it very clear to Medway and the KCC, that if HS services continued beyond Gravesend, the key route to Victoria via Bromley South would require a slowdown of the fast trains and possibly a substitution of other services.
Did Medway Council and the KCC accept the SRA findings? Of course not.
They have been deafeningly silent on this matter, ever since.
Medway Council's rail transport policy, centre's upon all trains passing through the towns, must call at ALL stations through it. You cannot make that up. See their development plans online, if you don't believe me.
In the same report, they (the council) strive to create Chatham as the hub centre of Medway. Well if every train has to stop at every station in Medway, it sort of kills off the 'hub' relevance of a future Chatham, don't you think?
In reference to Ebbsfleet, it is a daft name for a depressed area - as yet unbuilt, but is well inside the Gravesend urban envelope.
The station is set, of course, in a small mud stained valley.
The Audit Commission has 'encouraged' Gravesham Council to take the lead (in respect of immediate and future developments there).

The difficulty is, in having this small valley administered by 2 different local authorities, with two incompatible planning agendas - the other being Dartford.
The fact is however, that Ebbsfleet station is way too close to surburban Gravesend and very close to the town's commercial heart, that the Boundary Commission should investigate futher.
I took a train today from Ebbsfleet to Gravesend. The said train does not travel far enough as to gain even 50mph, due to arriving at Gravesend station a couple of minutes later.
The gap between both stations, is that close.
Business leaders outside Kent believe that it was (and is) childish civic pride and petty snobbery, as to why that station is not known as it clearly should be - Gravesend International.

    Abandon the medway "high-speed" service

Railways work best in reasonably straight lines. Time therefore to abandon the present high speed service to Chatham - maybe there's a case for a stopping service to the new destination of Kings Cross - but not at the expense of the existing service. Maybe passengers should change at Ebbsfleet?

    High Speed Trains

This is the MP who came out last year and said he does not use the Trains as they were rubbish !!
His comments can only apply to Folkstone/Ashford service, the rest is over prised and gives no time benefit.

We in the Medway Towns are thrilled to bits that East Kent now has such a good train service.
We of course have had our fares increased to pay for the "wonderful new service" service and actually recieved a worse service as a reward.
Jonathon Shaw and Paul Clark both MPs for Medway constituencies may well have reason to regret their lack of success in improving our transport links, in the not too distant future.

    high Speed Trains ????

Get someone to tell us how many High Speed Tickets have been issued since the start From Faversham up to Gravesend ??? It should prove interesting. If you think about it with some effort it's a service for the MINORITY not the MAJORITY, although it's, in effect, being paid for by everyone who uses SOUTHEASTERN an extremely high proportion are nowhere near this service. No one is going to convince me that having 52 yes 52 services from and to Faversham on a SUNDAY will ever come anyway near to paying for itself in my lifetime !!! Someone convince me !!!
