Video: Mixed reaction to free cash giveaway at shopping centre

Video: Shoppers react to being given free £10 notes

Random acts of kindness are few and far between these days, which is why I was delighted to hand over free cash to unsuspecting shoppers.

Smiles were put on people's faces as I helped hand out £10 notes as part of a £300 cash give away by The Forum Shopping Centre in Sittingbourne on Friday.

However, Ronald and Mary Beer, of Capel Road, Sittingbourne, refused to take the money to begin with as they thought there was some sort of catch.

But after a bit of gentle coaxing and explaining there was no hidden agenda they gladly took it.

Crisp notes were also handed over to friends Joan Wigg, 65, from Teynham, Lily Flanagan, 82, from Bobbing, and Christine Dines, 64, also from Bobbing.

Mrs Dine said: "Oh, lovely, thank you. I'm not sure what I'm going to spend it on - I might go to Bon Marche and pick up something."

Anthony Chapell, 53, of High Street, Milton Regis, was glad to receive the money but plans to give £5 of it to the Haiti earthquake appeal.

Rosemary Walker, 56, of Chilton Avenue, Sittingbourne, said: "I can't believe it. I've got money for nothing."

Young mum Yana Baum, 23, from Sittingbourne, who was with her two children Jack, six, and Amelia, one, said: "It's mad but great. It will help me out. I’ll use it to buy some nappies."

Ted Bell, 72, from Sittingbourne, said: "I'm very surprised. You don't normally get something for nothing."

Sally Bason, spokesman for the shopping centre, said: "This was a random act of kindness from the centre to give shoppers a bit of cash to spend in the January sales.

"It's had a mixed response. Some thought it was too good to be true and that you don't get anything for nothing; others have been extremely grateful; but nobody has been disappointed. There were even a few who said no and walked off."
