School sports day called off in case children fall over

Children ejoying races on sports day

Pupils at a north Kent primary school have missed out on their sports day this year - in case they fall over and hurt themselves.

Bean Primary School cancelled the event because its field, dry from lack of rain, was deemed a health and safety risk.

Bean Primary SchoolPupils were due to compete in games and races in the grounds of the School Lane primary but were left disappointed when teachers broke the news that the event, scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 22, was being called off.

A school spokesman said: "We wouldn't want a child to fall over and hurt themselves. Unfortunately the British weather is very unpredictable. It's completely out of our hands."

Common sense campaigners have called the decision a "totally disproportionate response" to a "tiny risk".

What do you think? Is this another case of health and safety going over the top? Leave your comments below.

good to see people blaming "pc" and health and safety (gornmad!) like the reactionary idiots they are.

clue - this has NOTHING to do with "political correctness" and very little to do with Health and safety,

Nothing to do with Health and Safety at all.
All to do with parents who are willing to sue if their child has an accident. I imagine the ones complaining about health and safety gone mad are the first ones to contact a lawyer if their precious little offspring has an accident.

There is an advert currently on a local radio station where a firm of solicitors actually encourages you to contact them if your child has an accident at school so they can pursue the school for compensation. It is because of vultures like this firm that events like this get cancelled.

Looks like they are using H&S as an excuse. The organisers are more worried about being sued for personal injury claims. Dont blame Health and Safety, its more likely that the insurers have put a very hiogh premium on the event!

Another example of Health and Safety gone mad. I suppose the sports day would have been non competitive anyway.

I find this hard to believe, I work in the health and safety industry and no right minded professional would ban this. Sure you need to have precautions in place but it just seems that as soon as any one needs a cop out they wave the h&s flag. Come on people get real if you don't want to put the work into organising an event properly don't raise the kids hope's and dash them down and blame health and safety

What is going on in UK?

Sheer stupidity rears it's head again over there

As an ex pat from Deal now living in France, all we can do is laugh at all the Health & Safety issues and being politically correct all the time.

Perhaps less time on PC and H & S and a bit more street cleaning would be in order.
Even Deal is not as clean as it was!
