Updated: Scooter crash victim fights for her life

Police accident

An elderly lady is fighting for her life after her mobility scooter was involved in a crash with a recovery van.

The victim was crossing Scanlons Bridge Road in Hythe at around 10.20am when it happened.

The woman has been airlifted for treatment at a London hospital.

Forensic officers are currently at the scene carrying out an investigation.

Dymchurch Road was closed either end of Scanlons Bridge Road and a diversion was put in place.

It caused long tailbacks and delays but has now been lifted.

Police said the road is expected to be closed for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798 538.

I hope we do get a safe crossing point at Scanlons Bridge Road and Military Road. At present there is no pelican crossing at either site. Pedestrians have to rely on gaps in the traffic and this is unsafe for all road users. We should campaign for this and name the crossing after Edith.

My deepest sympathies to all those invovled in the accident and their families.

However, regarding needing a crossing at this point - not to disagree - there are two pelican crossing within a few feet either way of where the accident occurred. Perhaps it would have been better to remove the non-crossing marked island to prevent its use and tragedies like this one?

my deepest sympathies to the lady's family, you are right there should be a crossing here as it is dangerous, the traffic lights that are already in place should have a pedestrian button. however in saying that not all people would use it. I am not saying the lady was to blame or the driver because I don't know.... but what I do know is I am a carer for the elderly and I believe they should be accessed before they are aloud to use a scooter as the road is a dangerous place and some people are not worthy of being able to access the situations well enough to keep them safe

To Mrs. RM, please accept my sincere condolences. Sadly, in situations such as this, the "bar-room experts" offer their opinion with no thought fot the feelings of those involved, either directly or indirectly.Remember, the truth will out. By then, however, the "experts" will have moved on to the next subject upon which to pass ill-informed comments. Please don't allow their ignorance to taint your happy memories of a loved one.

As the Grandaughter of the lady involved in the traffic accident this morning I would like to thank those who have left thoughtful messages. Unfortunately my Grandmother did not recover and passed away this afternoon with her family around her.

Rachel, my Grandma was actually a dignified and capable 98 year old whom her family admired and respected rather than the old biddie that you describe. Perhaps in future you should consider your comments and their impact before you hit the send button.

can I point out please that some scooters are allowed on the roads. if it a class 4 scooter that travels upto 10 miles a hour they have indicators hazard light head lights are taxed and SHOULD be sold with insurance if bought from a reputable dealer. The problem is so many pavements are not wide enough to take pedestriations and mobility scooters which is why many disabled people tend to use the roads. its a lot like cyclists, drivers tend to ignore them.

First and foremost, this is a tragic accident and i wish the lady a speedy recovery. I don't think however that a pedestrian crossing is practical in that location, particularly with the Sainsburys store being built just around the corner. The traffic is horrendous at times as it is, will only get worse once Sainsburys opens and would be unmanagable if a crossing was introduced.

My thoughts are with the victim and her family.

I would like to point out to the comment by Rachel that this lady was crossing the road to the island in the middle to get across to the other side & NOT going along the road!!!! That was an unfair generalision. It is a busy junction & I use it often so I agree a proper crossing would help.

This is at a spot where my husband, also a mobility scooter user, has previously asked the local Kent Highways department for a pedestrian crossing.
How many more accidents are necessary before they take action?
