Accident closes A20 in both directions between Folkestone and Dover

Locator for closed A20 near Capel

A lorry driver has died after a crash which closed the A20 between Dover and Folkestone for several hours.

Police are appealing for witnesses after two foreign registered lorries crashed and caught fire between Aycliffe and Capel just after 3.30pm on Thursday.

One lorry, which was travelling coast-bound, crossed the central reservation and collided with one going London-bound.

One was empty and the other loaded with mechanical parts.

Two people were taken to William Harvey Hospital. A 54-year-old man later died and the other has serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The A20 was closed in both directions until 3.50am Friday as the police, the ambulance service, Kent Air Ambulance and around 60 firefighters tackled the incident and repairs were made to the central reservation.

Any witnesses to the crash should contact the police serious collisions unit on 01622 798538.

Firefighter Andy Bain, from green watch at Folkestone fire station, said: "It was difficult getting to the scene because of the traffic.

"Both vehicles were well alight. Fortunately they were not carrying flamable loads but the fuel tanks were a concern."

I talked to my aunt and she knew all about the accident, because my uncle before dying in the hospital, could talk to one mail nurse in the hospital in spanish too and he was the one who gave the contacts about his family. She was in contact with the police, but she didn´t wanted to know anything about the accident itself, but i told her daugther about you and your brother, but she didn´t wanted to know anything more about it and thanked the help that you´ve given him in the accident. For my part i thank you too for the help you have given me and my family and god be with you both.

Having seen the aftermath of this accident about 10- 15 minutes after it happened I was shocked that the A20 (into Dover was still open) - fire engines police et al all present - when I had passed the accident I was still amazed that the London bound carrigeway was also still open (although traffic was not passing the accident)but cars were building up behind the lorries (surely the police could have closed the road at the last roundabout). My thoughts go out to both families who have been affected by this terrible accident.

Thank you for your help and wishes, Frances. Did he say anything else that you could understand? Did he said what caused the crash? If not, thank you anyway, because at least someone was there that care about him, like you and the drivers who tried to save him and end up saving the life of the other driver too.
I wish you well and your family.

I want to say thanks to the ones that did help us, and our prayers are with all of you.

There was no fog what so ever at the time of the accident.

As I came just over the hills from Dover I saw smoke in the distance. I pulled up as second vehicle behind these already burning trucks and couldn't tell what happened until i saw the central reservation.

But again, there was no fog and traffic was very very light at the moment, I think I only passed 2 cars and 1 truck going the opposite way from the roundabout to the place of the accident.

I would like to thank the Brittisch driver who pulled both truck drivers out and away from their truck with me, poored water of the Portuguse driver to put out the flames and comfort him.

It's sad to hear our effort didn't had any effect as he died later on. He truly was heavily burned though but well alive.

And indeed Dan; close your ports and you will not have the truck problem anymore, but enjoy the protest groups on air trafic by night as we see here in Belgium and then what? You buy, we deliver... We don't deliver, you don't buy!

I do drive about 2000miles every week, and the most accidents I see are not because of truckdrivers, only if it happens it has bigger concequences.

Anyway, my condolences to his family and all the best for the other driver.

just because they are in forign trucks doenst mean there not english drivers, surely if you know lorry drivers you know they have to do a hgv test and that teaches them how to drive lorrys so surely they have passed their test they have a right to drive, and they are making it so that lorrys are not able to overtake on this stretch of road. so what if it was foggy, snowing, raining, these people do more driving in a year than most people do in 10. so lay off the drivers and with out these people you wouldnt be able to go to a shop and buy anything..

Have u driven up past them when its foggy anony-mouse they are big enough and bright enough to see! yes its another tragic accident on a road that is prone to fog but i think maybe lorries should only be allowed single file on that section.its not the 1st and it wont be the last till something is done. With RefErence to Timbo; I didn't realise comments were resrved to people who live "in the area". Wherever are these foreign lorries coming from? It beats me....Dover maybe? The Continent? Abroad even? They must be coming into the country somehow. But then being "from the area" I suspect YOU know. But then, it's not really the point is it?

i wasnt relating to this accident, but I mean in general. lorries overtaking is a joke! especially on that stretch of road on the a20. it causes too many accidents. they have no reason to overtake. clearly if the lorry went into the central reservation, it was in the outside lane, so shouldn't of even been in that lane!

Nothing to do with over taking a head on where one lorry crossed the central reservation & crashed into the other lorry going in to the opposite direction. This is why our Government need to start charging foreign lorries on our roads! The clean up mess must have cost thousands, I have seen them go up & down the M20 ignoring our speed limited & road rules full stop.

Unfortunately it doesnt matter if the lorries are foreign or not - 90% are nowadays.

The road was foggy and complete accident and unfortunately it seems that two people have lost their lifes and another is critical with 90% burns
