Pupils at Whitstable Community College gave 'Nazi salute' to German students

The Whitstable Community College

Schoolchildren in Kent gave a group of German students on a twin town exchange a Nazi salute when they visited their school.

The behaviour from some of the pupils left their guests stunned and appalled said Sally Krause who, with her German-born husband Dierk, had been hosting one of the visitors.

She said: "While I find it appalling that such behaviour was displayed I am more appalled that no teacher disciplined the students immediately or apologised to the German students and their teachers.

"My husband is German and was equally offended by the behaviour but also ashamed that guests in this country could be treated in this way."

Mum-of-one Mrs Krause, of Victoria Street, Whitstable, said their German visitor from Borken told her husband what had happened and said they had been shocked by the Nazi greeting.

"We feel that due to my husband being German the student staying with us felt more able to express his feelings as it appeared from talking to other hosts they were unaware of the incident," Mrs Krause said.

"I can understand the students involved may have intended it as a joke but such behaviour is not acceptable and gives a poor impression of the Community College and its students."

Mrs Krause wrote to the Community College, Whitstable, about the incident several weeks ago but has never received a reply to her letter.

Richard Martindale, from the Community College, said: "The college can confirm that during a recent school visit it was reported that a few students had acted inappropriately.

"This was extremely unfortunate but immediately addressed by the head teacher during a mini school assembly.

"The college is very proud of the strong international links it has developed over recent years and takes any incident that may cause offence seriously."

The Learning Direct Centre at the Community College Whitstable is closing on 23 July 2010. This is very sad because it gave a good service to the community. I want to say thank you to the people at Learn Direct who helped me so much. Does anyone know why it is closing? The cuts?

I am really worried, too, about what's going on at CCW. I am told they only have about 90 pupils for their new Year 7 in September. Why are so many children from Whitstable choosing to go elsewhere for their education. They have spent millions and millions on the new school but it will be a real shame if it's half empty because Whitstable parents don't want to send their kids there.

I wish I knew what is going on at that school. Last week my nephew was thrown into what they call isolation because was wearing the wrong kind of shoes. He had to sit the whole day with things like colour the pictures set as work. Round him there were lots of kids behaving really wildly, using really crude language and such, with apparently not much being done about it. If that's the way things are at CCW, I'm not surprised pupils get away with the kind of behaviour in these comments.

What does Terence mean that Helena is already on her holidays? If the school has got a budget situation I'm sure she will be handling it well. And I hear they have a new chairman of governors and a new deputy chairman. I know a lot of staff are leaving next month - I don't know how many - but I'm sure it's all under control. I will go on supporting my Community School!

Dave is not being fair to the school. Lots of children go to other schools instead of CCW because these schools take lots of the best pupils unfairly. If CCW got a fair share of pupils maybe it could get out of being nationally challenged and reach its target of 30% A-C GCSEs with Maths and English at last. We should support CCW now because it's going through really difficult times because of its budget situation. Whose fault is that?

@Martin Costermonger - How on earth can you say that!!! It is people like you, self opinionated and ignorant who perpetuate behaviour like this. Fair enough your father, like 100's of thousands of other men & women fought in WWII, but they and their offspring don't behave like this. We should never forget the evil that was done by my people 70 years ago but the sins of the fathers should NOT be put upon their Great Grandchildren. The behaviour of these kids isn't acceptable and I see that the majority of the English feel the same way too. Werner Rhinehiemer, Emden

There is a curious mixture of long term memory to the point of historical akin to long standing fueds and short term memory: John Smith's last March" is March 2009, "in March" means March 2010, Which is it? Kids ARE a society's front page news and cultural ambassadors. They are our future, heaven knows we are going to be their burden. Empathy and understanding of culpability starts during kids first socialization. The cruelty of the British bullying society is reflected in these gestures of projected anger. Short or long we need memory to know that we share the world with others who have made as many mistakes as we. I hope tolerance was a virtue held by the visiting children.

@"M" Take no notice of these stupid attitudes. The British aren't squeaky-clean. It was they who invented concentration camps in South Africa, long before 1939.

@Martin: What do you think of Germans? I'm a German girl and I'm not proud of the german past, but how can you have the arrogance to condemn all Germans? Every country has its black sheep, even yours.
Moreover, neither the german students nor I are old enough to have witnessed WW2 and everything around, for us it's only a chapter in a history book. We won't forget it, but we don't bear the blame.

Super reputation who is john Smith trying to fool. The majority in teenagers in Whitstable attend schools in Canterbury, Faversham or even Herne Bay. Its only by default parents send there children to this school. Albeit the premises are quite new as it mysteriously burnt to the ground some years ago

As far as I know, this incident took place last March. This does not excuse it but it does raise questions about why the report omits to mention the fact. Every school and every organisation has some silly, inadequate members who let the side down. The Community College Whitstable has a super reputation for hosting kids from abroad, especially from Germany. Let's not condemn a whole school for the stupidity of a handful of kids who should and do know better.

These Germans have no right to be more prosperous than the Brits. They had better not win the World Cup! But then revenge will be sweet in 2012...will we let them in?

How dare these Germans be offended? Speaking as someone whose father fought in WW2 I feel strongly that we British have the right to remind the Germans of their disgraceful behaviour in the twentieth century whenever we like. Men like my father earned that right, and if we forget history we will repeat it. Keep reminding them, I say, then maybe they'll keep on the straight and narrow for a bit.
