Artist puts Glitter at centre of controversial work

Sadie Hennessy and her Gary Glitter 'Glam Rock'

An 'edgy' artist has has been slammed for creating sticks of rock with pop pervert Gary Glitter's name through it and giving them to passers by.

Called Help Yourself, the work of 'art' has a picture of Herne Bay on the outer wrapping and the name of the disgraced singer running through it.

Sadie Hennessy and her Gary Glitter 'Glam Rock'Sadie Hennessy, who lives in nearby Whistable, has been leaving piles of the rock by public toilets near her home and encouraging people to take them.

She has watched as people have taken a piece of rock and then been shocked by the lettering inside.

When the 1,200 sticks of rock she commissioned were sent to her all the boxes had things like 'wrong' and 'sicko' written on them.

However, unrepentant Sadie said: "I am not celebrating Gary Glitter in any way. My piece is about however nice life seems, there can always be something dark around the corner.

What do you think? Join the debate by adding your comments below"I have to be aware that feelings run extremely high around this emotive subject."

It was in March last year that rumours swept Herne Bay that the twisted glam rocker had made his home in the town.

However, no one provided any photographic evidence of their claims and many of the reports were contradictory.

Sadie, whose piece is part of the Whitstable Biennale arts festival, says the aim of the Glitter rock was to use hysteria surrounding the rumours about him in Herne Bay.

She said: "I was thinking about how to use what had happened last year in the town and also a lot of the art I do includes text.

"It’s been interesting to watch how people have picked up the rock and seen that it has Herne Bay on the outside and Gary Glitter in the middle."

This evil and sick woman needs medical help. The fact that she clearly finds the link between children eating sticks of rock and Gary Glitter amusing she needs locking up, if not in a prison then in a hospital for the mentally ill.
People like her have no idea how this sort of ignorance can affect those who have experienced such trauma.LOCK HER UP and THROW AWAY THE KEY!!

Pat; I agree with you entirely. She's making fun of other's misery and trying to make money out of it too. We might not all be "artists" but most of us know where to draw the line between decency and indecency. She's just another "wannabe" jumping on any old bandwagon.

I cannot imagine how someone who has been subjected to sexual abuse in their lives would feel if they picked one of these rocks up and saw that vile creatures name.
My daughter was one such person and I'm sure she wouldnt want anything to remotely remind her of it.
In my eyes this woman is as bad as Glitter if she thinks this is in the slightest amusing or clever.Sick, twisted, thoughtless woman,I hope you never find out it has affected anyone in your family.

I totally agree. For more bad taste and outrageous waste of commission money go and see what else is at the festival. Be warned the festival may contain 'nuts'! Of course the response is always 'you are not an artist' you don't understand. Some of the non-comissioned fringe stuff is fun though. You decide, your local authority paid for it. With your money!

I would love some of this rock. Can I buy it anywhere, or should I just hang around the public toilets in the hope of getting my lips around around a sweet cylinder?

I agree that it is significant that these "Works of Art" are being left in public toilets. DOWN the toilets would be better. The ultimate in bad taste?

What sick mind has programmed the computer to spout such filth?

I think this "artist" is clearly a sick person, who deserves to arrested, charged, and taken to court where she will met with a large crowd of people who will bang on the side of the van transporting her.

Let's see if she can stand it when she is inside the rock(ing van).
