Government puts Lydd Airport expansion plans on hold

Pro-expansion campaigners outside Folokestone Civic Centre for Lydd Airport decisionJust days after a controversial airport expansion was approved the corks have gone back in the champagne bottles.

The government has urged Shepway District Council to hold fire and not grant planning permission for a new terminal building and a runway until April 22.

That's despite the plans being approved by councilors at a seven-hour meeting on March 3.

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government wants time to decide whether or not he wants to look over the plans.

Great News ! Airport plans on hold

Great news for the area, I spoke at the meeting and watched the whole meeting and vote, how could councillors making the decision on the airport application have gone into the meeting with open minds and then stand and read from typed up speaches ? surely if they had speaches prepared they had already made their decision before the meeting had started ? well done to cllr Beaumont a true voice for the people of the local area.

Great news, but the pressure must be kept on to get the Sec of State to call it in on 22 April (note this will likely be well into the Gen Election campaign)

    Put on Hold

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has made absolutely the right decision. I am delighted at this decision.
Councillors had to make a decision which was based on beyond reasonable scientific doubt that the airport expansion would not cause damage to the environment. Of course there is doubt, and the conservative cobbling together of an experts report to make it fit an outcome some councillors desired is not only morally wrong, but they were not qualified to do this.
How much of council tax payers money has been wasted in employing consultants and experts, only for some councillors to completely ignore their advice. We will find out this figure, and then people can judge for themselves whether they feel conservative councillors spent this money wisely only to ignore it.

Good decision. Lets hope this is the end. I hope the Government make an evidence based decision that takes account of local opinion expressed in a ballot. Something local councillors could learn from.
