Pothole sign taken down for 'distracting drivers'... but what about the holes?

Ted Relf and his doomed pothole sign, in Shadoxhurst, KentPolice have forced a concerned Kent homeowner to take down a sign he created to warn drivers of a badly-potholed road.

Plumber Ted Relf was ordered to take down his homemade pothole warning sign because the police claimed it was a distraction to drivers.

He thought he was performing a public service but was surprised to receive a knock on the door from a PCSO (police community support officer).

Mr Relf said: "He said it was a distraction so I pointed at the road and said 'What’s that pothole then? That’s a distraction’.

"I  can’t believe it’s an offence to have a warning sign for the benefit of motorists and cyclists on my fence. I thought I was being helpful and public spirited.

"In the end we had a compromise, I will take the sign down and if the roads are repaired in the next two weeks it will stay down. If not, it will go back up."

Although Kent Highways Services workers have fixed some of the worst holes in the road, in the village of Shadoxhurst near Ashford, Mr Relf said that Church Lane and other roads were still bad.

Mr Relf also spoke to Ashford Borough Council’s planning department and was told it would cost him £335 to submit an application for retrospective planning permission for the sign. However as the sign is only temporary, he felt paying a large fee was unnecessary.

He said: "It is just a small chipboard sign about 27in by 27in. It went up last year as well and once they fixed the roads it came down.

"It’s obviously rubbed someone up the wrong way. It’s ridiculous really. If there are potholes then people should be made aware."

Police spokesman Jon Green said: "We didn’t force him to take the sign down. He willingly took it down after we spoke to him.

"There was a complaint and it was causing a distraction. Obviously we’ve got to think of the safety of pedestrians and motorists so we’ll be contacting Kent Highway Services to get the potholes sorted out."

Well, if the council has a problem with the sign, imagine what they would do if the pothole gardener from East London headed to Kent...

Thankyou so much for lovely comments in support of one of his issues. Yes hes married for 37years down to earth caring stood for Borough Elections Puts his self out for others time and time again, some are kind poignant gifts. He did this little sign purely to make other road users aware, keep people safe what is so wrong with that all this hype. The people who are not here anymore shouldnt have died because of a hole in the road. im so sad about that!!!
should not happen. Fill the holes properly give the worker the time and expertise to do it.
you cant keep on filling up the same hole year after year stands to reason cant be cost effective.
compensation paid out must be massive. shouldnt happen - should it?
A distraction that weeny little sign on my trellis fence,
why dont they go to the bad bend up the road pub signs galore advertising boards menu
chartfield one tiny area with the same sign at least eight signs. ashford sprinkled galore with insignifigant signs.
But my Teds sign is warning the public of a danger - which I hope will save others from injury or even worse. teds sign isnt imprortant its the people he wants to keep safe.

    Thankyou for your support. XX

What about all those adverts on roundabouts and other KCC street furniture that KCC are happy to collect the rents for?

The council have always claimed that they do not a distraction and do not cause accidents. But then would you tell your insurance co that you were looking at an advert rather than looking at the road?

I am very interested to note the support for Mr Relf and add my name to the list.
This is not a police matter at all. It is a planning/council issue.
Could we be told the name of the senior police officer who authorised the visit by a very junior team member?
Perhaps this uniformed public servant should be examining more positive things to do in the community? Is this part of neighbourhood policing?

As a local district nurse, l thank these local people forwarning me of the potholes, which are everywhere. So far l have damaged 3 tyres and my tracking. I am local to this area , so l am grateful to locals warning me of any further damage to my poor little car. Please put up signs as and where...
My eyes now are now down on the road and not watching ahead..which is far more hazardous.

I think Mr Relf ought to be thanked by the Police and his Council for his sign. It can only be down to brainless organisations that would find his actions dangerous by drawing motorists attention to iminant prominant dangers. We know it takes time to fill in every pothole on Kent's roads. Must be like painting the Forth Bridge, but surely damage caused by these holes could be reduced by 'friendly' neighbourhood signs.

I think they are doing their best and once the better weather arrives, the council will be spending money on permanent repairs.

isnt it funny how quick the police came round & forced this removal of the sign - probably being paid a backhander from the council - yet when you have anti social behaviour the council & police do nothing! I hope the person who complained falls over on the poor state of our pavements & roads and hurts themselves not badly but enough to make them think!

If this was a distraction to drivers what about all the other street signs installed by local councils? I suspect the order to remove the sign had more to do with the hi-lighting of the council's lack of action than of being a distraction to motorists. If I am wrong then I await with great anticipation the removal of all road signs once the police get round to telling the councils to remove them.

Presumably some prat on the council complained because they would rather pay their chief executives excessive wages and 200k golden goodbyes than use taxpayers money to fix taxpayer's roads. Good luck to Mr Relf, I would have refused point blank to take it down.
