Dartford tolls to rise to £2.50

Dartford CrossingTolls at the Dartford Crossing are to rise up to a whopping £2.50 for a single journey.

Years after the Labour government went back on a promise to scrap the tolls on the QEII bridge after funding for the structure had been paid, the coalition government today announced fees were to rise up to £2.50 by 2012.

The announcement, part of the government's Spending Review, will affect motorists and freight haulage firms using the controversial crossing.

A statement from the Treasury said: "Subject to consultatiWhat do you think? Join the debate by adding your comments belowon, prices will increase from £1.50 to £2 in 2011, then to £2.50 in 2012.

"The department and the Highways Agency are developing options to improve the crossing for motorists including: exploring a new additional crossing; using free flow charging to improve efficiency; and removing charges to aid flow when congestion is most severe.

"The increased charges will be used to fund this work."

KCC leader Cllr Paul Carter said: "This is another whammy for the motorist on top of increased fuel duty and petrol prices going up. The motorist is getting penalized again."

Opposition Labour leader on KCC Cllr Les Christie said: "This is a bit of cheek when we had Conservative MPs and candidates campaigning for the tolls to be abolished. A 50 per cent increase over two years is a bit of an imposition to say the least."

The bigger issue here is, what happens next? Ive heard that they are palnning to build a 2nd bridge around the woolwich crossing area. Is it US, the general public, that are going to now finance this project? If so then we bought it so we shouldnt have to keep paying for it, after all thats what roadtax is for surely.
On the other side if tolls are raised, a percentage of traffic will re-direct through Blackwall Tunnel causing congestion there aswell as at the Dartford crossing, cant see any winners here but the government. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GOVERNMENT WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE, all I see is us constently being ripped off irrelavant of what party is in the chair.
    MAKE THIS CROSSING FREE!!!!!!

To everybody lauding the French, this is the same country that has beautifully smooth tarmacced toll roads that cost €20 to use.

As long as the money is guaranteed to be ring-fenced for M25 improvements and regular users get significant discounts, I'm not sure what the complaints are.

and Kev as for the tolls going up rather than teachers losing their jobs!!! For one teachers get pretty good pay as it is, its respect they dont have and that is to do with laws not money! This country is in debt because of greed and that includes our government. Are you going to take a pay decrease of £200 a month to help get our country out of debt???

Ok for those of you saying this is only a tiny rise, unfortunately for people like me its not. I have to cross through that toll every day to get to work and £100 a month is a huge dip out of my wages on top of the price of petrol now! And lets face it rising prices is not going to ease congestion at the toll as people dont sit in that traffic day in day out for fun!!!! If they want to ease traffic congestion maybe they should use the profits they have been making since the bridge was built to build a train line that runs from Essex to Kent!!!!

YET another tax....and guess what businesses will pass this ON so everyone will end up paying, high inflation, high fuel prices...it all gets passed on. Think off the people who use it daily as they are unable to get a job in their own county as the jobs market is so rubbish. It only went up to £1.50 end of 2009 now they want to do it again...Make the sodding bankers pay but oh no they get away with it all & their bonues as well!

No teachers need loose their jobs. They just have to accept that they are overpaid, as the country doesn't actually have the money to pay them what they are currently receiving. Same goes for the Police, nurses and council workers.

I agree 2.50 (5.00 return trip) isn't a lot but its the principle of it that annoys me.We were told originally that when the tunnel was paid for the tolls would go.Then they reneged on that (typical politicians)and stuck a bridge up.Again we were told the tolls would go but no they're still there and going up.There would be no congestion and fewer accidents on the m25 if the tolls were demolished.Mark my words its the start of pay as you go on the roads, watch it spread over the next few years. We're in europe now so lets do the same as the French and blockade it.

This has to stop and as the earlier comment said the French would not tolerate it and neither should we.
Start now before they bully us with all of their reasons why it's justified.

£2.50 isn't a lot is it though. It's nothing compared to other charges for motorists like the Congestion Charge in London, the M62 or the Severn Bridge and after we've just heard about 490,000 workers losing their jobs, well, it would've been more if the toll price didn't go up. Another sensible cost-cutting plan

As for 'exploring a new additional crossing....' I don't think so! what, in the light of todays spending cuts announcements!
It's just a thinly veiled additional tax on the motorist and business. It's a shame we don't stick it to them like the French do!
