course was an Second World War anti tank device.
Bomb disposal experts were called to Westgate and Birchington

It followed reports of a landmine unearthed by a
greenkeeper preparing to plant a tree.
Officers sealed off space between the 2nd and 12th
holes so bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistics Corps
could assess the British-made device.
The bomb - around the size of a dinner plate - was deemed
unstable and was transported to Botany Bay.
It was then surrounded by sandbags and subjected to a
controlled explosion.
The blast left a 4ft crater in the beach.
Witnesses described seeing a plume of dark grey smoke
