Medway Messenger throws its weight behind city status bid

The Medway Messenger pledges its support for Medway's city status bid

The Medway Messenger is throwing itself wholeheartedly behind Medway’s bid for city status.

It believes securing the title in 2012 will transform the five towns into one city, while retaining its own unique identity.

The Messenger has pledged its full support for the bid to unite Medway because it believes it will be good for everyone who lives, works and visits the area.

Editor Bob Bounds said: "Sitting on the fence is not an option. We have considered the options and believe that success with a city bid would reflect where Medway is going."

Medway city campaign logoMedway council leader Cllr Rodney Chambers said: "I am very pleased that the prestigious Medway Messenger newspaper has added its support to the city campaign. Medway is already a city in all but name.

"Having the full support of such an important and respected media organisation as the KM Group will help us to tell people across the country why our area should gain, and deserves to gain, city status."

He added: "City status would be a recognition of where we already are and what we have achieved in Medway.

"Medway has come a long way since the naval dockyard closed 26 years ago.

"It has a population of 255,000, four universities, a famous cathedral, a Football League club, superb transport and trade links, a world-famous historic dockyard, a £6 billion programme of regeneration, rural areas and a great river setting.

"Medway is a place with a rich heritage and undoubtedly has a great future.

"Most importantly of all, I believe it is the people that make Medway. It is our strong, diverse, talented, vibrant community who will champion our city credentials."

"I am pleased to welcome the newspaper and its readers on board and look forward to working with them between now and 2012 to win city status for Medway."

Among the earliest supporters of the bid are international pop giants Status Quo, singer, actor and entertainer Will Young, and the University for the Creative Arts.

At least 10 other bids are being drawn up by Bolton, Croydon, Ipswich, Luton, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Perth, Reading, Swindon and Wrexham.

The arrogance of Conservative councillors in deciding on our behalf that a city of 'Medway' will somehow enhance our lives - beyond pre-rebranded bins - is shameful and as antidemocratic as any East-bloc stunt. We have not been asked but told. Not even the so-called Citizens' Panel were asked. The entire Kent Messenger Group loses all credible evenhandedness by throwing its readership behind such a bid.
The surreal scandal is the 'loss' of Rochester's true City status - which cannot be unintentional. Rochester Catheral and Castle bear witness to over 800 years of inherent City-ness that cannot be wiped aside by self-aggrandising civic meddling. How Kafkaesque was it to use Rochester Cathedral for the investiture of the latest Mayor? Once the Queen has seen through the scam, we can and should demand the legitimate City of Rochester be returned to us.

Since the Council tell me that the cost of the bid is just 5 p per resident, I have decided to auction my contribution to see if anyone else agrees with the valuation on e-bay

City status should be given back to Rochester. It was held by Rochester for 800 years until somebody very conveniently 'forgot'to re-apply for city status. 800 years of history all gone - but who cares about all that - just re-apply for city status for Medway. Don't worry about what the people of the Medway towns want. Don't worry about the fact that there is no where actually called Medway Just carry on you Councillors and bulldoze your way into getting what YOU want, as per usual. Sandra J

The name is wrong. Don't tell me they are proposing to rename Rochester Cathedral as Medway Cathedral or Chatham Dockyard as Medway Dockyard. The Medway is a river not a city and the whole idea is cheap and tawdry marketing and attempted self aggrandisement by council wide-boys.

How much will this 'bid' cost? When will these irresponsible idiots at the council realise that the days of wasting money are over?

Medway is not a city. It is a unitary authority. Rochester is or was a city and still would be if they didn't mess it up. The VT that was shown at the concerts at the castle did not show the Medway I live in!!!
