Kent pubs in Michelin guide

Pearsons in WhitstableTwo pub landlords are raising a glass after being included in the Michelin Pub Guide for the first time.

The guide for 2011 has been published, with a total of nine Kent pubs making the list.

The guide, which celebrates the best local pub grub, features more than 500 Great Britain and Ireland hostelries this year - 70 of them new.

The Red Lion in Milstead and The Pearsons Arms in Whitstable (pictured left) have both made it on to the top list for the first time.

Landlord and owner at The Red Lion (pictured right), Patrick Coevoet said "We are very pleased and also surprised."Red Lion, Milstead

He attributed their success to changing the menu regularly and making the pub nice and comfortable.

He said it was derelict when they took it on five years ago.

Commenting on this year's guide, Derek Bulmer, the editor says: "Our guide shows that pubs are not dying, they are merely changing.

"The traditional drinking pub has undoubtedly been suffering but those that are making efforts with their food are flourishing.

"Even some of the breweries have acknowledged this and have begun recruiting talented chefs. If there is one message it is; adapt and thrive."

John Peters bitterness is understandable. But you dont need just good food to run an intersesting public house. A pub is a pub at the end of the day. Michelin should also acknowledge this. But it is totally down to the landlord or landlady to make the pub visit a memorable time. The host has to break the mould. The key is good staff and good "punters". Get rid of the alchopop kids, and get pubs back to what they used to be.

What an absolutely ridiculous and condescending comment by Derek Bulmer the editor of the Michelin pub guide when he says that for pubs "if there is one message it is adapt and thrive"!!
That may well be the case for some rural and village pubs but what about the urban, city and town pubs who are disappearing at an alarming rate. Does he really believe that changing the food from pie and chips to scallops on pea puree will drag all the town and city centre punters in?? What Derek Bulmer does do is give hope to all young aspiring editors cause if he can do it then there's hope for everyone!
