Core blimey! There was a rumble in the crumble when two teams battled it out to create the biggest version of the apple and blackberry pud in Faversham.

The supersized cook off at Brogdale Farm was filmed for Monster Munchies - a new TV series hosted by former England rugby union star Matt Dawson.

The 37-year-old, a regular on the BBC quiz show A Question of Sport, said: “We’ve been all over the country this year, cooking classic British dishes on a giant scale.

“We’ve already had Scotch eggs, Bakewell tarts, Cornish pasties and Devonshire cream teas and all of them have been absolutely incredible.”

The home team of six chefs from Brogdale-based Scott Anderson Limited won the wooden spoon in the Kent contest but there was nothing humble about their losing crumble.

The gut-busting dessert used more than 2,500 apples, 80kg of sugar and bucket loads of blackberries.

It measured almost four metres long and was so heavy that a lorry was needed to carry it to the judge’s table.

A JCB digger was brought in to dig the pit which served as a makeshift oven.

Team leader Scott Anderson, 36, said: “I’m exhausted! This has to be the most number of apples I’ve ever chopped and it’s certainly the biggest baking tray I’ve ever used. It took more than six hours just to peel the fruit.

“As many ingredients as possible came from the farm - from the Bramley and Katy apples that went into the filling, right down to the mint we used for the topping.”

Mr Anderson, from Iwade, near Sittingbourne, added: “For us, it was all about the flavour and the presentation. Ultimately, size doesn’t matter when it comes to cooking.”

The panel of judges marked each crumble for its size, presentation and taste before declaring chefs from a Kent-based food manufacturer the winners.

And after tucking in to the winning dessert, Matt confessed: “I think crumble has to be right up there amongst my favourite foods, although I do like a bit of banoffee pie as well.”

The first episode of Monster Munchies will air on The Good Food Channel (Sky channel 249 or Virgin Media channel 260) in November.
