Tory calls Thanet girls 'sluts' on Facebook

Payam Tamiz's Facebook chat

Payam Tamiz's Facebook status revealing his views

by political editor Paul Francis

A disgraced Conservative council candidate has made a public apology for calling girls in Thanet "sluts" on Facebook.

Payam Tamiz, who is a candidate in Salmestone ward in Margate, was forced to resign from his party after postings he made on the social networking site.

Mr Tamiz said he now wanted to move on and put his "poor judgement" behind him.

Payam Tamiz"I understand my Facebook remarks were inappropriate and unacceptable and I unreservedly apologise for the offence I have caused."

The comments by the 21-year-old graduate, who is studying to be a solicitor, are highly offensive to women. One referred to women as sluts.

Mr Tamiz was also alleged to have been a member of a Facebook group called "Girls in Thanet... you are all slags, hoes, brasses and bheads", but he denies this claim.

His postings have now been deleted but it is understood party chiefs considered them highly insulting and inappropriate.

On his Facebook profile, he stated: "I can come across as blunt and rude but that's just me!"

Cllr Bob Bayford, Conservative leader of Thanet council, said: "Obviously, we are very disappointed, shocked and surprised.

"We believe this to be totally unacceptable and the outcome is the only one possible."

Mr Bayford said he had spoken to Mr Tamiz after being told of the comments but had left it for him to decide how to respond.

Labour party spokeswoman Iris Johnston said: "It is unfortunate that it appears to have taken media interest to force him to resign. Some of the comments he posted go back to 2009.

"This was clearly unacceptable and he should have been properly vetted."

Mr Tamiz will remain a candidate as electoral law means his name cannot now be withdrawn from the ballot paper.

Only last week, he was photographed with Conservative party chairman Baroness Warsi ahead of the election on May 5.

As far as I am aware none of the 'Ladies' from Thanet have complained, I doubt very much if they care who calls them what. Name calling has no impact on their lives. My point was that there is freedom in this country to live ones life in any way which suits you personally and that no one has the right to critisise your choices. I value this freedom. It's very precious and should be protected caefully.

Unjust: This is a totally wrong and manipulative thing to have happened. It is such a shame to see that some people who shall we say do not have the greater good of the country at heart and are simply using school yard tactics and selfishness to destroy and demolish someone. It is so sad to see this especially as a candidate, and despite this comment, Payam had been engaged in numerous positive projects for this locality. I am sure that if we tried to put the focus on many of our mp’s and all their private comments then we would not have any political domain left. All I can say is shame on those people who have tried to bring someone into disrepute. Complete shame on those politicians who have used something to manipulate and deceive the public’s interest and who have intently destroyed a good candidate to further their own games. Politics is truly a dirty fighting arena and one which has been the cause of mud to be slung at this good candidate.
