Black widow off to London Zoo - with 450 babies!

If you thought one black widow was bad enough, think again.

The spider found at Chatham Docks earlier this month is pregnant.

And the average number of offspring they produce?

A staggering 450.

However, those petrified at the thought of a small army of the deadly arachnids in the county can breathe easily.

The expectant mother is on her way to her new home at London Zoo.

Vet Mark Rowland dealt with her when she was first brought to the Trinity Vet Centre in Maidstone in a Chinese takeaway carton.

She was found in a container by workers importing cars from the United States.

He said: "I am taking her to London Zoo today. When I looked at her yesterday I thought she looked a little bigger and it turns out she has got a sack of eggs.

"I checked out the average size of a sack and it is 450 eggs. As a result I am in a rush to get her to the zoo."

A bite from a black widow is 15 times more deadly than that of a rattlesnake.

It can cause muscle pain and spasms, nausea, vomiting, a coma and even death. The effects can last for weeks afterwards.

Mr Rowland is pleased with how things have turned out.

"The zoo is happy to take her and that should be that. It is a happy ending," he said.

just 'cause she was found in chatham doesn't mean she was found in a council estate. i don't deny that the majority of chatham is made up of council-chav estates but since they discovered her at chatham docks i doubt there are any scroungers living there, actually IN the docks. just saying. ;) and just in case you decide i'm trying to defend my hometown, i was born and bred in neighbouring rochester :)

Oh my god. I just thought maybe there is more than one, she got caught but maybe she had her friend Stella with her, and her Husband Maurizio who gave her 450 babies. He must have some sperm count.

Anyway, maybe there is one near you right now while you are typing ready to bite that lovely British flesh.

Maybe one is scuttering around the Pentagon Centre Chatham eagerly awaiting to bite an obese Chatonian coming out of Mcdonald's with his or her own brood. Be afraid, Be very afraid

She looks cute. Can I have one for myself I have a string of people I would like to introduce her too.

I come to England with my 450 babies to squeeze the txts of your country.

I sneaked in illegally on a Ford Fiesta being built in Brazil.

I am now claiming indefinite leave to remain so I can claim from your country's very generous benefits system and I need money to feed my 450 babies. I have found a good home in London paid for by Housing Benefit and my Council Tax benefit is paid too.

If one of your english complain I just climb on you and sting you and within 20 minutes you go stiff as they say dodo

I plan to bring my husband Maurizio over too and between us we would like to move to Howletts Zoo and have many many more babies. Child Tax Credit is very generous and I do like a good jiggy x

Should have let it go in Chatham. Once she gave birth, they could have cleansed the town of Chavs & hoodies!

Yes, imagine if they escape and begin to breed - they could grow to such huge numbers that they rival the big cat population currently roaming the Kent countryside!

I said it the first time and I will repeat it again. Please try very hard not to be stupid. This is a dangerous, invasive insect species. I called it a breeding female at the time (obvious even in the poor quality photo) and I was correct. Do the sensible thing and kill it humanely. The babies are very very small. Safely containing them will be very difficult at the very best. Expect several to get out. There will undoubtedly be male and female escapees. Then, unless we are very lucky indeed, expect a breeding population of a dangerous, invasive insect population in Kent. Just how much antivenin have we stockpiled with the NHS?

May I suggest a familiarity with the pharmacology? Try doing an internet search for Merck, black widow and antivenin - the pdf is short, to the point and enlightening.

Please do note the problem of misdiagnosis of symptoms and now place it in a locale that normally doesn't see this insect at all. Recent stories abound of GP's who have had difficulties with pediatric pneumonia, which is comparably much more common. Do you really think they will do better with an exotic onset? Really?

Ah well, not to worry. The usual meaningless apology will be proffered at the end.
