Fuel convoy protest heads to Dartford Tunnel

Dartford Crossing

A mass convoy of fuel protesters through Kent did not cause the traffic mayhem predicted.

Around 40 vehicles were said to be heading from the M2 services at Farthing Corner, making for the Dartford Tunnel.

It left at around 8.15am, and was set to head for an Essex oil refinery.

But instead of the 40 vehicles planned, just five turned out. And there was no disruption or delays to traffic.

Speaking before the event, Assistant Chief Constable Gary Beautridge said: "We have to strike a balance between the lawful rights of protesters and those of people who go about their daily life unimpeded.

"Our priority is to ensure the safety of the travelling public."

Here's a thought. Artics, parked bumper to bumper, outside Westminster, while the drivers take their break (which is required under EU regulations and driver's hours rules) and, quite absent mindedly, take their keys with them? They would be complying with the law, but might inadvertently cause a little disruption to Parliament while they have a well earned cuppa and discuss the price of fuel.....

They started at Farthing Corner surley the most expensive petrol station in the whole of Kent. Deisel has been over £1.40 a litre up there for months now.

They would have been better off putting a blockade around certain petrol stations meaning that the station loses it's income (then hopefully they would reduce their prices and start a knock on affect to the other garages) ..

Hilarously ironic that a campaign about rising fuel prices entails.........using more fuel as part of said campaign.

God what a typical British attitude we have - leave it to someone else while price go up & up & Up.

People who dare to critise such action should orgainse their own action, least some people are trying to do something rather than sit on their backsides moaning.

This was all over BBC Kent, Twitter & Facebook over the last week!

The group who had arranged this said it was well advertised on TV and radio/Facebook and Twitter so how comes the first I heard about it was on the evening news. Also would it not be better to hit goverment rather than the everyday person going to work.

A better protest would be to boycott particular brands of fuel turn by turn .If they have no customers they may well also lobby for change .It is not the forecourt that is raising prices it is taxation and opec but if we have the forecourts on our side we have a better chance of winning .

I drive a van for a living if the fuel cost me more I pass that extra cost on to my customers and I will continue to do so. So why should I care what it cost ???

The fact that only 5 people thought this was worthwhile says it all. All five are now probably filling up with petrol and wondering why they also paid £3 for the Dartford Toll.

Great. I need to use the M2 to get to work. I am self-employed so only get paid when I work. If it takes me twice as long to get to work then I don't get paid until I get there, will use more petrol and then won't earn enough to pay to refill. Agree something has to be done but don't hit the normal working person with your blockade this will only p**s people off. Target the people that can change it.

i agree that fuel is too expensive but why do this, who are you aimming this at because it a waste of time. Now if you where going to come into London and protest around whitehall then it might be worth it. all you are going to do is cause a problem on the motorway.
