Ashford M20 footbridge named as the Eureka Skyway

M20 bridge at night

Ashford's iconic new £8 million M20 footbridge finally has a name – the Eureka Skyway.

The name was chosen by a selection panel comprising representatives from Kent County Council, the Kentish Express and local councillors, following a competition in the Kentish Express to find a name for the bridge, which links the Eureka Leisure Park to the Warren Retail Park.

In all, 130 entries were submitted suggesting names with all sorts of themes, including well-known former residents, names with geographical or historical association... as well as a few outlandish and sarcastic suggestions.

Kentish Express editor Robert Barman, who was one of the judges, said: "The Skyway suggestion was immediately liked by all the judges as it sums up the bridge's design and look. We would like to thank everyone who made the effort to put forward name suggestions."

Mr Wolfson said he was delighted to have his suggestion adopted as the bridge's official name.

"I started off with three name ideas and it just snowballed really," he said.

The official opening ceremony is due to take place at the end of this month.

OhDear - as many people get confused it is not Ashford Borough Council that has funded for this new bridge it is infact KCC or highways that deals with these. and for everyone else i think having this foot bridge is a brilliant idea maybe less people wouldnt have to run across a road and risk getting run over like a friend of mine to get to the other path espically when crossing by junction 9!

Eureka is the name of a tacky swingers club in Kent. I will think of that place every time I walk on this bridge.

"The Council's Folly"? Another £8m wasted on something no-one asked for, like the Drover's roundabout traffic lights, and the 'shared space' with the ridiculous lamp posts. How about another road bridge over the M20? Or pedestrian bridge over jn10, so the lights could be switched off there? Three depressed cheers for Ashford council.

Surely "Geronimo Bridge" would have been a better name.
