Poppy Appeal launched

Maidstone's County Hall has been covered with poppies to mark the start of the Royal British Legion 2011 Poppy Appeal in Kent.

As many as 90 poppies have been pinned onto the gates of the building - symbolising the 90 years the charity has been running.

Ex-servicemen and women, who had been helped by the legion in the past, also stood "shoulder to shoulder" pinning poppies on each other.

This year in Kent alone, more than 1,300 veterans have been supported by the appeal which helps them to get their lives back on track after returning from conflict.

Nicholas Bennion, 32, from Gillingham and pictured below, served with the 1st Battalion Princess of Wales Regiment for seven years. After serving in the Balkans and Iraq he said it was not easy returning back to normal life: "It was difficult for me to understand laws outside of army life. The money that I was earning was not as much as I was earning in the armed forces. Poppy Appeal Nicholas Bennion

But it was the British Legion that has brought me here today - without them my family and I would still be struggling."

The ex-serviceman now works as a warehouse assistant but believes more should be done to help soldiers returning from the front line: "The blood of servicemen and women brings so much glory to leaders of a country so the government should do more for them - rather than just leaving it to the Royal British Legion."

As a country, so much we have done to other countries trying to get regonition(politicians) that we are doing the world a favour yet not realising that those within the thick of things that gets the job done for them that wear 3-piece suits and a big pay pakage are negelected.
As for the Royal British Legion they stood out when body else could, to them they realised those that gets the jobs done are those who dawn the Union Jack and proudly flying the flag, for they have stood side by side and like wise the country and every politicians needs to stand side by side with Army, Navy and the Air Force for our men and women that proudly serve the country lets remember them.

Something precious is a treasure to the heart. The country of Great Britain is a precious treasure to many. For the fact is without the selfless act of such brave veterans, service man and woman past, present and future this treasure would not so be today. People lets join shoulder to shoulder with our brave armed forces and the Royal British Legion giving something back to those that have brought this treasure to be.

1 in 8 rough sleepers are ex servicemen, yet we give council houses and benefits to asylum seekers. How warped is this country.
The RBL do a fantastic job for our servicemen & women just as they do for us. Let’s get behind this truly great charity.

One of the great traditions in this great Country of ours.

These people do a wonderful job and deserve our support not just at this time of the year.

Go on everyone, dig deep into your pockets. We should see everyone in all of our towns and villages with a poppy on their lapel.
