Footballer Mark McCammon wins £68,000 in discrimination case
A former Gillingham footballer has been awarded more than
£68,000 in compensation for being unfairly sacked by the club
because he is black.
Cash awarded - which totals £68,728 including tax - includes
sums for breach of contract and loss of earnings.
Ex-striker Mark McCammon took the Gills to a tribunal for race
discrimination after he was dismissed by them last year.
The 33-year-old claimed the League 2 club docked his wages,
refused him treatment for an injury and fined him for not turning
up in heavy snow.
He alleged he and other black players were treated differently
from white players in the first race case a footballer has
ever brought before an employment tribunal.
McCammon's case against his former club was upheld by an Ashford
employment tribunal last month, which decided he had been dismissed
as an act of "racial victimisation".
