Gills boss Scally defends coach offer

Gillingham v Accrington Stanley

Action from the Gills match against Accrington

Gills chairman Paul Scally has defended the club’s decision to offer cheap coach travel instead of giving fans their money back as promised.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler pledged to pay back hundreds of dedicated supporters who travelled to Accrington last month, when Gills lost 4-3.

After 10 days of waiting to find out how they could get their money reimbursed, fans were told on Wednesday that instead of a refund they would in fact be offered cheap coach travel Plymouth on March 3.

Since the announcement was made, the club has ammended the offer to a £20 voucher towards coach travel to any away league game this season.

The offer sparked an angry reaction from some fans who branded it as worthless and "a joke".

Paul ScallyChairman Paul Scally has defended Hess, who he said made the offer in a moment of high emotion.

He added: "It was moments after he had come out of the dressing room. He said something in the spirit of the moment when he was very disappointed with the players’ performance in the first half of the game. People have to take that into account.

"It was an offer from the heart, a genuine gesture. He didn’t sit down and plan what he was going to do.

"It has to be taken in the manner it was intended. If people don’t want to do that then they are not true supporters."

"It was an admirable gesture from him and the players. I’m disappointed that there are some that have turned it into something other than the way it was intended."

Mr Scally said the club has already had around 400 calls from people claiming they were at the match, when in fact there were only 261 fans at the game.

Andy HessenthalerHe said: "When we do offers like this there are people who make mischief and try to benefit from it. Unfortunately, that’s just a fact of life and a sign of the time perhaps.

"I’ve suggested to Hessy never to make an offer like this again, because clearly it’s been misinterpreted and mishandled. I’ve said to him it just isn’t worth the effort. It won’t ever happen again."

Hess also spoke about the offer this morning. He said: "We can’t keep everyone happy but I’ve done it with good intent after the game because I felt for the fans, that’s how it is and we move on now as far as I’m concerned."

To receive their voucher, supporters must visit the club’s ticket office by Wednesday, February 29, with a match or coach ticket, a train ticket or a receipt from the motorway services.

Hmm.. Maybe I AM a true fan because I recognised Hess's aftermatch comments for what they were - and I never really expect to get money back for bad performances, which as a Gills Supporter are something of an occupational hazard.

But it he manager's comments were 'heat of the moment' then presumeably the Chairman has had longer to consider his remarks.

To call supporters who travelled the length of the country to watch the club 'not true fans' because they do not show humble gratitude for what is basically a marketing gimmick available only to people who use the Club's official services is, I can think of no other word, insulting.

It cost me about £40 to watch the Accrington match (bus, train, entry) - I travel from Leeds. The Plymouth match is simply out of my range - esp not via Priestfield! Just not an equivelent offer. By all means make the offer to supporters, but don't pretend it meets any offer, however non-serious, made that day.

(Just one other point; 261 is preseumably the number counted through the away end turnstile, and the away end is uncovered. How many Gills fans were there in the rest of the ground)

Not impressed or surprised by the move of the club. I myself was present at the match and a full refund is the very least we deserve. As a gesture to my fellow supporters I have decided to pick up the cost of travel to Plymouth for any supporter wishing to travel to home park in March. Im well known at Gills as The Binman, please contact me and lets get a big away crowd for Plymouth. Up The Gills

i am incensed by the chairman's comments, in particular 'they are not true fans'

put simply, how dare he, his arrogance knows no bounds, and his ego, together with that of our incompetent manager, will take this club nowhere

i won't deny hess's heart was in the right place and his intentions good, but if the club manager says they will offer a refund, then that is what they should do, the ins and outs are irrelevant - you can bet your bottom dollar that if the chairman was offered something verbally, then when it was presented it was actually something completely different he would be the first to pick holes in it, so he is being hypocritical as well

mr scally, travelling to accrington ****dy stanley on a freezing cold winter's day IS being a TRUE fan

while you live in luxury i have not even got enough money to get to payday, yet will still get to every home game, somehow.

but as i choose to disagree with your intolerable attitude on this, i must not be a 'true' fan in your eyes

you start to repair some of the damage you have done to your reputation by backing the manager with signings all year, but cannot help pushing the self destruct button yet again!

is it any wonder that the customer service at gfc can be appalling, with you setting the tone for what is and is not acceptable.

dreadful, absoluely dreadful. in my forty years of supporting the club, I have never known such a gulf between the club and it's fans, and that is YOUR reapsonibility!

The odious little toad opens his mouth again. It's like he is trying to alienate the club's fans.

Oh well, we might not be able to show our fans any respect but at least we can subsidise the Dear Leader's business class flights from Dubai every now and then!
