Journalist held in illegal payments probe

Metropolitan Police

A national newspaper journalist arrested in Kent over claims of illegal payments to police and public officials has been bailed.

The 58-year-old man was one of five Sun journalists held by police.

Three other people - a member of the Armed Forces, a Ministry of Defence employee and a serving police officer - were also arrested.

All eight have now been released on police bail.

The Met Police said the arrests - at addresses in Kent, London, Essex, Surrey and Wiltshire - were part of the Operation Elveden investigation into illegal payments.

Operation Elveden was launched as the phone-hacking scandal erupted last July.
