Seven fire stations to close

Fire stations set to close

The fire stations in Kent set to close

by Jess Banham

Eight fire stations are to close under sweeping reforms, it's been revealed.

But one threatened station, in Horton Kirby, has had a stay of execution: it will remain open until a replacement is built in nearby New Ash Green.

At a meeting of the Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority today, it was decided to close the other seven stations by April.

Those axed will be part-time stations in Halling, St Margaret's at Cliffe, Sturry, Matfield, Queenborough, Rusthall and Seal.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said no firefighters will be forced to take compulsory redundancy.

Fire EngineInstead, it plans to redeploy them to neighbouring stations or offer "alternative flexible contracts".

The shake-up comes after KFRS was told to expect a major cut in the amount of money it receives from the government - thought to be in the region of £12 million over the next three years.

Firefighters are also said to be attending fewer fires and other emergencies, with a 25% drop in call-outs since 2005.

But the plans have outraged some residents and the Fire Brigades Union argued lives will be at risk if the stations close.

FBU Kent secretary Mark Simmons said: "Our argument is that seconds count. The quicker we can get to an incident, the better chance we have of achieving a successful outcome.

"Fighting fires is dangerous in any circumstances, but tackling a fire that has been left longer to develop creates added risks to firefighters, as well as increasing the possibility of fatalities or serious casualties."

According to the union, response times could increase by up to four and a half minutes if the stations are shut.

But Ann Millington, KFRS chief executive, said "We have taken three years to do a review of all of our cover across Kent and what we are trying to do is get the best possible cover for all of the people of Kent.

"We inherited in 1947 all of the stations when the service was created. Many of those stations are in the wrong places for modern needs.

"We are building five new stations, but closing eight that are genuinely in the wrong area and with low activity.

"We are still able to cover all those areas where stations are closing."

The service plans to open new stations in New Ash Green, Herne Bay, Ramsgate and two in the Medway Towns.

Rapid response units, 4x4s and quad bikes could be used to respond to certain incidents in a bid to save money and improve emergency response times.

This is frankly intolerable. Maybe the answer in to accept that a professional fire service is unaffordable and establish volunteer fire brigades in the villages and towns which will be deprived of effective cover ? This system works very well in non-metropolitan Australia and allows the available funding to be concentrated on providing quality training and equipment.
I have been a volunteer for over 10 years in a small town with a similar sized population to my native Hadlow. We can fully crew our 4 appliances with trained structural firefighters in 6 minutes, 24/7/365. Support is automatically dispatched from other volunteer brigades in neighbouring towns and the 'Pros' with their specialist appliances are available on request.

yet again less fire engines, once these stations close, the brigade is already streached when there is a big job and pumps have to come in from surrounding brigades. they dont need to save money as they are wasting it on new engines and stations. they are not closing these stations to save money. once again no one has listen to members of the pubilc where these stations are closing.you will be waiting longer for pumps to turn up to a call as they have now more area to cover, most of the parttime pumps are of the run alot, ann go back to running hospitals and leave the fire brigade to someone who has the experance and know what they are doing. these cuts will end up costing lives and or firefighters lives.why put these propsals out to the pubilc when you all ready have decided what your doing from the start? why close all part time stations and not wholetime or day crew stations ?????

Sorry Zed you are talking to the wrong people -- i just know too much about the service (34 years worth ) and no its not old fashioned socialism when you are hanging out of the window waiting for the "nearest " fire engine to rescue you --- i really hope you are never in that position -- much as i disagree with your comments. I can only hope that when ( and i mean when ) a seriuos fire is investigated by the coroners office they ask the appropriate questions as to where were the "nearest " fire engines -- the recent fatality in Hythe might be interetsing when the coroner reports.doccaur prudence

Union mentality and out of date socialism is unaffordable and unnecessary - god I hate the 'bad old days'..... Thank goodness we can't afford to go back to them. Public services cannot resist long overdue reform. It's my money and I'll spend it based on risk thank you, not ridiculous rose-tinted specs mentality.

I thought we had a coalition government ? No wonder your old ex bill and not a serving officer as your observation skills are a bit off the mark.

If these fire stations are not needed after all the time they have been there why has so much taxpayers money been wasted in the past keeping them open all these years???? It has taken 3 years of discussions to come to the conclusion that these fire station should close. How much taxpayers money has been wasted in the 3 years on so-called 'consultation'. Grab-all-and-give-nothing-back that's the Tories for you.

I am disgusted that the spineless penpushers at KFRS think it is acceptable to put our outlying villages (and major infrastructure eg Dover port) at risk by closing St Margaret's Fire Station. Playing about with theoretical scenarios is no substitute to having engines on the ground. Last week's Folkestone fire showed how stretched they already are, when they called round stations begging for relief crews to be mobilised. God help the next organisation that Ms Millington does a hatchet job on.

So lets get this right --- people on here actually WANT fire stations to close . Perhaps the senior management of the service would like to tell us what proportion of those that replied to the "public" consultation really wanted closures. I take it that others on here will still have their fire station on their doorsteps --- ask the people who live in the villages what they think . Its just another disgraceful step taken by an out of touch frie service that relies on statistics --- shame on you you uniformed senior officers for taking the "party" line and not having the backbone to stand up for the service that we all care for. And as for the elected councillors who have made the decision --- you disgust me in your inability to see what is happening . Wake up before its too late -- recapture the service from the ill informed people who are running it .

Sure sign the Tories are in. They could shut everything down but we Jo public will be not one penny better off.
