Update: Family GP was found hanged

St Mary's Medical Centre, Vicarage Road, Strood

A family GP was found hanged this week.

Dr Festus Ojagbemi, 49, had worked for 11 years at St Mary’s Medical Centre in Vicarage Road, Strood.

The experienced doctor was found hanged on Monday in his detached house in Stalham Court, Kingsdown Close, Hempstead.

An inquest in Maidstone, which opened and adjourned on Thursday, heard he had been depressed for some time.

Dr Ojagbemi, who trained in Nigeria, joined St Mary’s 11 years ago after moving to the UK in 1992.

St Mary’s Medical Centre closed throughout Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday cancelling scores of appointments. It re-opened this morning.

A sign on the surgery door said: “Due to the very sad loss of Dr Ojagbemi passing away the surgery will be closed until Friday, February 17 at 8.30am.

"We ask for your understanding and patience at this very difficult time.”

Patients expressed their sadness, with one saying: “He was an excellent, caring doctor and will be sadly missed.”

If you knew Dr Ojagbemi, you can leave your tributes below.

Saddened and shocked. Wish we could have helped with whatever was troubling you. Thank you for all the care you gave as a professional to aid us in our care of others. We sometimes don't appreciate what professionals give of themselves. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Rest in peace Festus.

I am in deep shock !
I first met Wole as we trained together at the Gravesend obstetric unit in Kent- round about 1996-1997, Whilst on attachment to the old Joyce Green Hospital . I have socialised with him on and off over the years .He was at my wife's 40th birthday !The last time was at a mutual friend's 80th birthday .We sat at the same table . He has always struck me as very level headed .The question is why did he do it? - As am sure all that know him well are pondering .
My heart goes out to Jackie and everyone close to him .
