A lorry driver has been released on police bail after a man was killed in a crash on the M20.

Kent Police believe the victim, from Ashford, had stopped on the hard shoulder when his car was hit by a truck.

The 41-year-old Belgian trucker, from Bruges, was arrested over the smash and taken to a police station for questioning.

He has since been released on police bail until May 29.

The crash happened on the coastbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9, close to Charing, at around 6.45pm.

The driver of the car, a Citroen Saxo, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for almost five hours after the crash

Police closed the motorway between junctions 8 and 9, diverting traffic along the A20. The road was re-opened at about 11.30pm.

Kent Police are appealing for witnesses to phone the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.

The driver that was killed was my best friends brother. Why can't peole just be respectful and think of what the family are going through rather than turn this tragic news in to a row about the drivers nationality?

@man up. Of course the origins of the coach driver and the passengers were mentioned but the term "foreigner" was not used....he was called ENGLISH.... The North of France also has its "fair share" of British motorists involved in accidents, particularly when they drive on the wrong side of the road!

"More people are killed on the hard shoulder than any other lane". Possibly because more are stationary on the hard shoulder?

Lionel, so the French press didn't mention a single thing about where the coach was from and who was on it? The fact they where a school trip but no mention of what school they where from or how the local people where feeling?
It's a matter of interest that this driver was foreign because he probably was left hand drive, did this contribute? Was he rushing to/from a ferry? Did he fall asleep? Who knows, thats why the police look so deep into every road death. And in Kent, we seem to have more of our fair share of accidents involving foreign drivers.

A few days ago here in France, a coach driver fell asleep at the wheel of the coach he was driving and the resulting accidentcaused one death and numerous injuries to the children aboard.Everyone here is upset but nowhere is there mention of a "foreigner" driving. WHY do the English have to specify this detail?
Is there some significance in the driver's origins?

First of all my thoughts are with this persons family and friends. I travel this road from Dover to Maidstone and back every day and unfortunately see far to many incidents on an almost daily basis. Only last Monday at Hythe a car was stopped in the outside lane causing a nasty accident so my comments are as follows. If you have a problem with your car get off the carriageway and get away from the car, watching the oncoming traffic at all times. Its a proven fact that drivers will subconsciously and unwittingly drive towards flashing lights so please get well away from the car and then call for help. More people are killed on the hard shoulder than any other lane.
