Suicide risk teen inmate dies

Cookham Wood

A teenager has died after being found unconscious in his cell at a Kent young offenders institute.

Alex Kelly, 15, had been identified as being at risk of suicide or self-harm at HMP Cookham Wood, near Rochester.

Staff attempted to resuscitate him before he was taken to hospital after being discovered in his cell at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

But Alex was pronounced dead at 7.30pm on Wednesday, a Prison Service spokesman said.

He had been serving a 10-month detention and training order for burglary and theft from a vehicle.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "Every death in custody or the community is a tragedy for families and has a profound effect on staff and other offenders.

"The National Offender Management Service is committed to reducing the numbers of deaths in custody.

"Each death is subject to an investigation and, since 2004, these have been undertaken by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

"Additionally for young people who die in custody there will be a Serious Case Review, commissioned by the Local Safeguarding Board. Strenuous efforts are made to learn from each death and improve our understanding and procedures for caring for prisoners, including young offenders.''

A Prisons and Probation Ombudsman spokesman said: "We are very sorry to be informed of the death of Alex Kelly and extend our sympathies to his family and friends, whom we will involve in our investigation if they wish, and try to answer any questions they may have.

"Our independent investigation will aim to identify the full circumstances of the death and whether there were any failings in Alex Kelly's care.

"Where possible we will identify lessons to be learned and make recommendations to the Prison Service to help prevent similar deaths in future. We also share any findings with the Coroner to assist with his enquiries."

This story is awful, such a young boy with his whole life ahead of him.

Perhaps he could of gone on to do worse things, or he could have turned his life around and done great things.

No one will now never know.

I would imagine most of the people within the prison are at risk of self-harm and suicide or at least claim to be just to get attention.

They can't all be constantly supervised can they?

While, i suppose, it's tragic he decided to kill himself, his family have to take lots and lots of responsibility for this. He was still a boy at 15 and had he have been brought up properly by those that 'cared' for him then he wouldn't be there in the first place. To be locked up at fifteen means he MUST have had a record as long as your arm.

He won't be breaking into anymore houses or cars of those people who work to pay his and most likely his family's benefit cash!

RIP - I wish your family hadn't let you down.

My deepest condolences to those who cared about this boy and its terrible he felt he had to end his life, But please do not say that a hard life is a reason to commit crimes ,I had a horrendous childhood, beatings ,poverty, an alcaholic parent ,squalid housing and did very poorly at school yet i managed to be an indipendant adult who bought up her 3 children alone and all have no crime records, each teenager has their own will and if they choose to turn to crime I dont want to hear it blamed on anyone else or a hard life.

I am sorry that this young man has been let down by so many, mainly, 'HappyFeet,' his parents in the first place. This young man was a very troubled individual when I first met him five years ago. He was let down by his parents, his foster parents, and the social services.
I know why he was inside and he caused a lot of people a lot of trouble and expense by his actions. I was a victim of these actions but once again I say I am so sorry he felt that there was only one way out to deal with his problems. I have no sympathy whatsoever with his family because they were the reason he was were he was. But hey sue the authorities. How cynical do you want to be!

This is so unfair. The media want people to read a good story but have they ever thought about how hard it is for the people who knew this boy. No they don't. They don't even care! As long as they have a good story they don't care who they hurt or upset in the process. Heartless, cruel people.

My heart goes out to this lads family and friends their loss of someone so young is terrible, but don't blame the prison service as if the poor lad had not committed a crime he would not of been there in the first place. Its true people never get thanked for their work but one tragedy and they get slaughtered.

I think its fair too say, that this is indeed a sad situation. However, before the finger is pointed and the Prison Service is blamed for the death of this young man, you should wait for the facts to come out.

The Prison Service keeps thousands of Murderers, Rapists, Pedophiles, Burglars and robbers away from the public for our protection and yet they are NEVER thanked for the work they do. Yet as soon as something bad happens its suddenly the Prisons fault? Unfortunately Bad News is published and good news is rarely seen!

would of been nice if his family could of had the chance to sort theirselves out and tell his extended family and friends before it was plastered everywhere in the news, but who cares right anything for a good story. journalists make me sick bunch of voltures. As for the prison service think they can expect a lengthy court battle for the serious and gross neglect. this should never of been a possibility.
