Brutal attack on 'trolley man' Shaun Turnbull

A brutal iron bar attack on "an innocent and harmless" Deal man has outraged his community and left friends and colleagues in tears.

Shaun Turnbull, 46, the "trolley man" at Sainsbury’s in West Street,

was savagely attacked by robbers on Thursday at 7.20pm.

He was walking home from work along Church Path when he was attacked by two men demanding money.

When he told them he did not have any, he was hit around the head with what he describes as an iron bar.

The vicious assault left Mr Turnbull with a fractured right cheekbone, cuts to his left eye, bumps to the back of his head and concussion.

His eye area has needed stitching and he needs an operation to his cheekbone.

The attackers are both described as white males, aged about 18, with dark hair.

Police have been in the area today carrying out house-to-house enquiries.

Det Sgt Sheena Barrell said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the area last night to contact us.

"We would particularly like to speak to a woman out walking her small brown dog who walked past the victim in Church Path moments before the incident took place, as she may have vital information that could help with our investigation.

What do you think? Join the debate by adding your comments below"This was a very nasty and completely unprovoked attack on a man who was simply walking home after a day’s work, and we are determined to find the two offenders."

Despite the severity of the assault, Mr Turnbull made his own way to Deal hospital, where he reported the incident to staff who alerted police.

He was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in Margate.

The call for information is echoing widely throughout the closeknit community where he is a popular and well loved figure.

Friends and acquaintances are using Facebook, urging witnesses to come forward.

It is believed Mr Turnbull has worked for Sainsbury’s since the superstore opened more than 13 years ago.

A colleague said: "We are all devastated. There have been about 10 members of our team in tears today because of what has happened. None of us can believe it. We are all really shocked.

"There is no reason at all why Shaun should be attacked, he is a really nice guy. Everyone knows him as 'the trolley boy’ at Sainsbury’s. The customers love him, he would do anything for anybody. This is a disgusting assault."

Comments about the attack on Facebook today include:

  • "An innocent and harmless man was brutally attacked yesterday by what can only be described as low life SCUM. Shaun, the trolley man from Sainsburys, was badly beaten about the head with a metal bar by two men for no apparent reason. He made his way to Deal hospital by crawling there and was then rushed to Margate hospital, where he is apparently not in a good way. Please if anyone has any information do not hesitate to contact the police. These low life scum need to be caught. Deal is looking out for you Shaun..... you’re one in a million and always make going to Sainsbury’s a pleasant experience, with a smile and a hello for everyone. May your recovery be a fast one as I for one look forward to seeing you back at work."
  • "Hoping that everyone will keep their eyes peeled and their ears open for any info on the spineless cowards that attacked Shaun! The police are doing all they can but with such a wide network between us all on Facebook somebody will hear or see something that may help. "If you know anything please contact police ASAP and lets get together to put this scum behind bars. Keep 'em peeled."

Anyone with information can contact Kent Police on 101 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting crime number ZY/2609/12.

I have just come back from a vistit to Dubai UAE. Here you are able to walk around without fear of attack - could it be something to with the fear of the just treatment they would get if committing such offences. If and when these thugs get caught perhaps they should be whipped and prisoned. Oh I forgot 'Human rights'

I would never condone this behaviour, it was a vicious crime and i hope the people involved are punished and the man recovers fully.
However unless you are a skater, tennis player or golfer (and i'm not sure all these are available to teenagers in the evenings anyhow) then no there really isn't more to do here for youngsters nowadays!
Absolutely agree that we need zero tolerance (from the young and old) to this sort of behaviour but feel it is unfair to blame it all on teenagers that simply have nowhere to hang out! You cannot say that every teenager behaves in this way!
As far as the police are concerned, and I have had dealings with this myself (but with a person in their 40’s who was abusive, rude and to be blunt a total thug) they are just not interested. Unfortunately they won’t deal with abusive behaviour unless it turns into an actual crime – this I find frightening, abusive behaviour from anyone needs to be dealt with as soon as it starts and like you said zero tolerance is I think the only way to go!

This an awful crime but there are far more things to do in Deal since I was a lad. The skatepark, tennis centre, golf road club, vickie park etc...

There is no excuse for teenagers to roam the streets and car parks and viciously attack someone for money to fuel their drugs and alcohol abuse.

We need a zero tolerance attitude and more police.

Totally agree it was a disgusting, shocking and cowardly attack on an innocent man, and as I have seen on Facebook there is so, so much support for this fellow. I hope those responsible are punished properly, this slap on the wrist - don’t do it again nonsense does not work. This is a really serious crime and should be treated as such, the problem with this type of attack is the possibility of trauma to the victim long after the cuts and bruises have gone. I just do not understand why anyone would stoop so low! I wish Mr Turnball a speedy recovery and hope he can put this behind him and get on with his life and that justice is done for him.
Moving on to a comment made by ‘hs deal’ … One thing I think we must remember about youngsters is the fact that there isn’t really anywhere for them to go of an evening! Anyone that has grown up in Deal will know this from their own teenage years. We all used to meet up in the library car park, near Walmer beach, down kinsgdown, near mark wood park and so on but sooner or later people would complain and we were moved on and places were closed off, problem is they were quick to respond to the people wanting these places closed off but never interested in listening to what we wanted – which was just somewhere to hang out and have a laugh, eventually we ended up round the streets or as mentioned, by the train station, then we all grew up, got jobs and had families.. That’s just life! It’s frustrating but until something is done where can they go?! Maybe this is something that needs to be considered!

Totally agree with 'dealtown girl's comment, I was sickened like the rest of the community when I heard about this. I hope Shaun recovers quickly and is able to return to work soon.

Deal is one of the safest towns in Kent but recently we have had a spate of serious crime and an increase of anti social behaviour, boy racers, graffitti and rubbish discarded on our streets. I believe tourism can significantly increase the prosperity of the community. I was deeply saddened on Friday night to see a young family come down for the weekend via the highspeed service to be greeted by groups of underage drinkers and boy racers in and around Deal train station.

I have spoken to a community police officer and written to the town council about the damage this does to our town but quite frankly the response i got from the police was pathetic.

My personal opinion is that our police coverage in Deal is totally inadequate. The police station has been cut back to only open 2 hours a weekday and worryingly several months ago after an arson incident near Tides Leisure Centre the attending fire crew who requested police attendance was told they were unable to respond as all units were in Dover.

Yes these are difficult economic times but the cost that crime causes outweighs the cost of enough police resources. I will be writing to our MP, Charlie Elphicke and if you feel the same way I encourage you to do the same.

This is a shocking attack on a popular man! The whole town is behind him and everyone is keeping their ears and eyes open in the hope these monsters will be caught soon! They are best off handing themselves in to the police before members of the public find out who they are!
