Test your breath before driving, holidaymakers warned

Hand-held breathalyser

Carrying a breathalyser will be compulsary in France

Kent motorists will need to carry disposable breathalysers when driving in France - or face a fine.

French President Nicholas Sarkozy announced the measure, to allow drivers to check they are under the legal drink-drive limit, as part of a road safety drive.

It will be made compulsory by law from this spring, along with existing rules meaning drivers must carry a warning triangle and display stickers showing which country their vehicle is from.

Drivers caught without a breathalyser in their car will face a €17 fine.

Andrew Kelly, from Dover to France ferry operator DFDS Seaways, said: "Although the new law is not due to be implemented until the spring, and final details are still to be announced, we want to ensure our passengers are fully aware of the obligation to carry a breathalyser in their vehicles when driving on French roads, and will be fully prepared.

"DFDS Seaways will continue to provide its passengers with the opportunity to purchase compulsory driving equipment on board, so that drivers can ensure they are compliant with all French driving laws."

This measure has been announced but has yet to be ratified, though a rough date has been set for implementation by 1 Paril and it is worth being aware of it. This is just one of a number of changes that affect motorists and bikers going to France this year. GPS warnings of radar traps are now illegal, for instance. Full details, translated from the French, can be found if you search Google for "New Laws in France for Drivers and Motorcyclists in 2012".
