David Grant explains his
big break
He is now a national TV star, mentor on Fame Academy and
voice coach.
But David Grant got his first big break thanks to the KM
Group.
Speaking at the Kent 2020 business event at the County
Showground today, David told how he had almost given up working in
journalism when he wrote to the KM at the start of his career.
He had heard we published a Jamaican publication called the
Weekly Gleaner, and asked to be considered for a role.
He was taken on, and mentored, but was told he would need a big
break if he was ever to make it further.
Enter the world's greatest boxer, Muhammed Ali!
The American was in Britain promoting his book, unsurprisingly
called The Greatest, when a young Grant begged him to give him a
chance - and an interview.
Ali said he was busy - but the youngster was to come back at
5.30pm that day to his hotel.
After a short jog around Hyde Park David was granted an
exclusive interview with the legend in his hotel room.
He
claims his entire career would never have happened in that way if
it hadn't have been for that afternoon in London.
And his first shot at the working world wouldn't have come about
if someone hadn't taken a punt on him all those years ago.
He told the KM Group's business editor Trevor Sturgess:
"None of the things I have achieved would have happened had it not
been for that chance they gave me, when they didn't need to.
"I would like to hope businesses throughout Kent would give
people that opportunity."
He urged firms to think of helping others in the same way they
had been helped.
The star of Fame Academy spoke for around an hour at the
lunchtime presentation.
It's believed this year's event is the biggest ever.
