Welling United 3 Staines Town 0

by Matthew Panting
New Welling boss Jamie Day enjoyed a dream start to his
managerial career in Blue Square South on Saturday.
The Wings turned in their best performance of the season to ease
past FA Cup giantkillers Staines.
Day played the 90 minutes, pulling the strings from the middle
of the park alongside the much-improved Lee Clarke.
Welling had plenty of invention, passed the ball well and made
good use of both wingers, Loui Fazackerley and Tony Finn.
Leroy Griffiths shot wide in the third minute for the visitors
but Welling took the lead six minutes later when Tom Whitnell took
advantage of some slack defending to score from 10 yards.
Andre Scarlett was then denied by keeper Charlie Mitten, who
enjoyed a third successive clean sheet, before Welling dominated
the rest of the half.
Fazackerley and Clarke both went close to doubling the lead
while two Finn corners bounced invitingly across the face of the
six-yard box.
Two goals in two minutes at the start of the second half made
the points safe. Michael Deane's 20-yard free-kick was only beaten
away by keeper Louis Wells for Clarke to prod home the rebound on
48 minutes and then David Woozley turned in Adrian Stone's cross
under pressure from Whitnell.
It could have been more for the Wings as Michael Deane's
rampaging run ended with his shot being turned behind and then Finn
saw his shot deflected wide.
Clarke shot wide in stoppage time but, even though he booked up
a booking late on, nothing was going to spoil Day's managerial
debut.
The only downside for the Wings was that, despite the efforts of
groundsman Barry Hobbins in getting the game on, only 462
spectators made it through the turnstiles.
