Welling United players willing to take pay cut as club face substantial five-figure tax bill

Seven Welling players agreed to a pay
cut last week, manager Jamie Day has revealed.
The Wings face a race against time
to pay nearly £90,000 to HMRC and, although the cuts have now been
put on hold, Day admitted that his squad were willing to do
everything they could to help the club.
"Seven players originally agreed to
take pay cuts," said Day
(pictured). "They didn't argue about it, they just got on with it, and that
shows the character of the squad that we've got here.
"No-one argued, they just took it on the chin
but fortunately the budget has stayed where it is for the
time being.
"The players I've got are not here for the
money, otherwise they would have gone elsewhere as they had bigger
offers from other clubs in the close season - I know they are here
for the right reasons."
Day admitted that the squad
had been affected by the off the field problems, although
he is hoping that things can now be resolved
sooner rather than later.
He added: "When people's wages and livelihoods are under
threat then it does have an effect.
"But the boys have been first
class. We
told them two days before the start of the season
which is not ideal but they've got on with it and I'm pleased with their
response.
"Next week will decide what happens
with wages and stuff like that but I'd like to think we've got
together and shown we can put up a decent fight on and off the
pitch."
Day has made more than 150
appearances for Welling and is hoping that his local club can
overcome their problems and prosper again.
"This is my second time here, it's
my local club and I don't want to see it fade away," he said.
"I think we can achieve something
this year with the squad we've got and I hope we can keep them
together.
"As much as we can do off the pitch
to help the club, then we will. If everyone has to take pay cuts
then we will as we want the club to be here in 10 years'
time."
