Gillingham 0 Lincoln 1

Gillingham players are confused and dejected after the game. Picture: Barry Goodwin.

Gillingham are still waiting their first win of the League 2 campaign after slipping up at home to Lincoln.

The Imps took the lead after just nine minutes through Cian Hughton. The Lincoln man fired low into the net after Albert Jarrett’s initial shot from the edge of the box was blocked by keeper Alan Julian.

Gillingham failed to muster a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, while visiting keeper Joe Anyon was able to comfortably deal with any crosses coming into the box.

Only Adebayo Akinfenwa tried his luck. An early chance was blocked by Adam Watts from close-range and later in the half he tried his luck from distance but saw the shot sail wide.

The Gills started the second half much brighter, helped with the early introduction of fit-again Curtis Weston.

Danny Spiller and Akinfenwa drew early saves from Anyon and Tony Sinclair headed narrowly wide from a Chris Palmer corner.

Despite Gillingham’s improvements Lincoln almost doubled the lead when Jarrett showed great feet to find some space and he picked out Delroy Facey.

The striker though spooned his shot over the bar just before the hour mark.

Substitute Luke Rooney tried his luck from distance, but Anyon saved, and the keeper was there again to deny the Gills man moments later with another good effort.

With two minutes left Akinfenwa hit the post with a low shot and the ball bounced back across goal into the keeper’s hands.

Lincoln almost doubled the lead in bizarre circumstances moments before full-time and Tony Sinclair was forced to clear off his own line.

Gills: Julian, Sinclair, Nutter, Gowling, Lawrence, Maher (Weston 50mins), Bentley (S Payne 59mins), Spiller, Palmer (Rooney 59mins), Barcham, Akinfenwa. Subs not used: Cronin, Essam, White, Southall.

Lincoln: Anyon, Green, Clapham, Pearce, Watts, Keltie, Anderson, Jarrett (A Hutchinson 80mins), Hughton, B Hutchinson (Broughton 90mins), Facey. Subs not used: Musslewhite, O’Keefe, Swaibu.

Attendance: 4,838.

I too was at the match yesterday with my family. It was sad to hear the boos and think we heard enough of them last season!! I must admit it was the worst game I have been to and the first time I wanted to leave early. We love supporting the Gills and have every faith that things will improve, especially when the likes of Fuller and Richards return. Would be nice to see McDonald play too!!! So, Gills fans, be patient - I know it's frustrating but it'll be ok!!! We need to get that spark back!! Am missing the Shrewsbury match as I am away and am slightly glad as I don't think my ticker could take it lol. UTG!!

The first half was as bad as I've seen Gills play for a few years. No energy, hesitant at the back, devoid of ideas in midfield, and lacking movement up front. Lincoln looked very comfortably set up, allowing Gills to ponderously play the ball in front of them, and then when they got the ball breaking neatly with short passes. No one ran beyond Akinfenwa, so hence their defenders never had to turn in the first half and were very comfortable. Akinfenwa is a good target to hit as he is so big and holds the ball up well, but it was only in the second half anyone got close to him to link up play. He's not a forward who is going to flick much on, because he is too big. He's got the athleticism of a fridge! Second half for Gills was better. Weston and Rooney added a bit more energy. Maher and Bentley were both woeful and it was a relief when they went off. Barch got a bit more involved and Rooney had a couple of strikes. However, over the whole game, probably didn't deserve a point, as tactically Hess got it wrong, and players just didn't look up for it in first half. Maybe Hess should have remembered the old adage about not going back! In conclusion poor effort against a not good Lincoln City side doesn't bode well for the rest of the season!

Saw the game yesterday and thought the team were slow into the tackles, were always second best in effort in getting to the ball and didnot have the desire thyat Lincoln showed - in other words no passion to get the ball and do something positive with it.
Akinfenwa is a good holding player and needs two players playing off him for him to pass the ball to - shame we do not have two Jacksons in the team he would have revelled with this man in the team to hold play up.
The players need to attack the full backs and go at them not keep passing the ball back or across the pitch - as we did all game yesterday - result we had no cutting edge.
Lincoln deserved the points for their effort and the luck they made for themselves.
Hessy is a good manager and will get this right but it,s the players who have to ask themselves are they up to the task and good enough to be in this team - if they don't want to give 105% every game then they should ship out.
Bentley and Maher looked tired and out of position - neither had a good game and deserved subbing.
The team need a shake up - start Rooney with Akinfenwa and get Spiller or Weston backing up these two - they both have good shots and can change a game in an instant.
OK - rant over get your fingers out and show some pride in wearing the shirt or move away.

Great Idea: Get Stimo back for the home games, which he could win, and let Hess have a go at the away games - that way Hess can't be any worse than Stimo!! HaHahahahahah

I missed our first home game of the season so yesterday was the first chance I had to make any real judgment of the side this season post 'Muppet' (aka Stimson).
I was very disappointed with our first-half showing. Neither side looked up for it and apart from Lincoln's goal neither keeper was troubled. Akinfenwa won the ball time and again but there was no other Gills player within yards as there were huge gaps in our attacking formation.
Maher was totally ineffective. Failed to make any real contribution and it was no surprise that he was subbed. Danny Spiller worked really hard but tried too often to play a 'killer' ball and the quality of his delivery was very erratic - either awful or really good.
When Hess went to a more traditional 4-4-2 we looked much better and dominated much of the play for long periods but lacked the cutting edge and also a bit of luck.
Overall i felt we looked nervous and did not play to our potential.
It doesn't help that we are missing several key players and the sooner one or two more are back the better.
Finally, the midfield lacked any real invention but I would persevere with Spiller and Weston and drop Maher right out of the side as soon as Payne is fit. I'd unload Maher and McCammon as neither have ever earned their money on a regular basis while at Priestfield

"I mean what is the physio doing?"
Another spot on comment from a top drawer armchair pundit.
I expect our physio is sat around drinking tea and reading a magazine.
Why rush them back? If there injured then there will be a variety of injuries involving a variety of recovery times.
    Is this board for real??????

Gills are making their own hole, and they will drop straight through it into the conference. The man digging the hole is not me but Scallys wonder boy aka Hess. He has not got a clue. He proved that last time around, and had 5 years, a lot more than some people did. But if you are the blue eyed boy.............

I know one THING we need MARLON KING go and get him hessy before its to late otherwise we could be fighting to stay UP!!!!
