Morecambe 1 Gillingham 1

Danny SPiller battles for the ball in the 1-1 draw at Morecambe

Gills here Danny Spiller battles for the ball at Morecambe

by Luke Cawdell

Danny Spiller rescued a point for Gillingham with a late goal against Morecambe.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men had the majority of the chances in the game but were trailing after Craig Stanley headed home on the hour.

Spiller’s goal earned the Gills a point but little consolation as they remain in search of their first win of the League 2 season.

The Gills had the better of the first half chances and should really have been ahead by the break.

Morecambe were reliant on shooting from distance and their best effort came from Phil Jevons, whose shot was palmed out for a corner from debutant keeper Lance Cronin.

Andy Barcham had plenty of the ball in the first 45 minutes and his cross for Mark Bentley on the half-hour mark almost produced a goal, but a combination of keeper Barry Roche and defender Chris McCready cleared the danger.

Moments later Barcham had a shot of his own, but Roche was there to save and with five minutes of the half remaining the Morecambe goalie excelled again by tipping Danny Spiller’s free-kick over the bar.

Another good chance fell to Spiller early in the second half but he blasted the chance across the face of the goal.

The Gills were made to pay for missing those chances as a cross from the left was headed home by Craig Stanley just before the hour mark.

Gillingham levelled the scores with six minutes to go when Palmer’s free-kick was bundled home by Spiller.

Keeper Roche made a great save from Barcham in injury time as the Gills pressed for the winner.

CHOPPER> Yes you are correct I was not there yesterday but so far this season I have been to Norwich and Hereford as well as all home games as I have been for 25 years plus so I feel as much as anyone that I have a right to voice my criticism and some would argue I have paid enough to have earn t it!! Pray tell me what other reason can you suggest why we haven't won away for nearly 2 seasons? The only difference so far this year that would explain a slightly better away performance is the quality of the opposition is inferior to last year, Norwich apart.

You obviously weren't there yesterday John. I was, and your uninformed opinions are groundless based on the performance I witnessed. I'm looking forward to being at Bury next week to see a similar performance from the Gills. If we play like we did yesterday, there's every chance we will win.

Will you be there John, or will you still be bad-mouthing a hard working side from the comfort of your own armchair?

Excuses are running out, had them all, bad luck, don't get what you deserve, football is a funny game etc etc.
Lets be honest, they are a gutless collection of not even has beens that go all limp away from the comfort of their "home". They give their loyal supporters nothing! How else can one explain their inability to win away from home for nearly 2 seasons? Morecambe must be such a tough place to get a result...I think not!!!!"!
