Gillingham 1 Cheltenham 1

Bayo Akinfenwa celebrates scoring the equaliser with fellow Gills players

by Luke Cawdell

Gillingham had to settle for a point during a frustrating afternoon at Priestfield on Saturday.

The Gills were behind early in the second half but had new signing Adebayo Akinfenwa to thank for rescuing them a point.

Gillingham caused plenty of problems in the Cheltenham defence in the first half but were unable to get the vital goal.

Andy Barcham teed up the first chance of the match but Curtis Weston fired narrowly over from 20 yards.

Barcham then went close himself moments after, with 19 minutes gone, when he beat Danny Andrew in the box but the keeper saved.

Just before the break Jack Payne had a long range effort that went safely into the keeper’s hands after taking a deflection off defender Steve Elliott.

Cheltenham stunned the home fans when Keith Lowe’s deep free-kick found Thomas in the box and he fired in low past Julian with eight second half minutes gone.

The Gills were level with 76 minutes gone when Jack Payne’s throw was met by Akinfenwa and his flick eluded keeper Brown and nestled in the back of the net.

Gills: Julian, Sinclair, Nutter, Bentley, Gowling, J Payne, Weston, Spiller, Palmer (Akinfenwa 54mins), S Payne (Rooney 64mins) Barcham. Subs: Maher, McCammon, Jackman, Essam, Cronin.

Cheltenham: Brown, Riley, Andrew, Lowe, Elliott, Thomas (Bird 71mins) Pook, Low, Smikle, Artus (Melligan 90mins), Goulding (Jeffers 85mins). Subs: Lloyd-Weston, Shroot, Gallinagh, Bird, Watkins.

Attendance: 5,655

Gills failed to get all three points from not pulling the trigger in front of goal first half. The young kid Payne looked a little bit lost but to be fair he was up there on his jack on his debut! Smashed em in last 20 mins when the dark Hulk came on, Rainham end are going to love him! Jack Payne looks quality and if he continues to play like that Gills wont be able to keep him. Overall Gills looked strong and will get stronger, Nutter is my only worry, great left foot but defensively very poor which will show in away games a lot more. Up the Gills and 3 points at Hereford.

first match, huge expectations, was never going to be a sure thing or easy. got better as the game went on. gowling had probably his best ever match in a gills shirt and won almost every ball at the back. akinfenya looks an excellent signing at this level, and did all the things that mccammon has never shown even touches of, ie holding up the ball, lay offs and a quite unique goal on his debut! for me the surprise signing of the summer has to be spiller. his workrate is firghtening, he goes in for the first tackle, then second and then third to finally win a ball he has no right no win, THAT is pssion and workrate mr stimson, not what a certain mr miller used to contribute, ie sit and sulk after missing the first tackle. spiller's touches are a class act especially at this level, if he stays fit then you wonder where jackman fits in this year, and maher looks like backup only for the impressive and learning payne. sinclair needs matches though and his distribution is way off the mark, is it too late to bring in the experienced chris perry for a year to do a dave martin for us?

but the feel good factor is definetely back, it no longer feels like "them and us" as it did under stimson, you feel like we are all in it together with hess, hendon and the players applauding the fans after the match which was a hark back to the "good old days", whereas stimson was in the dressing room before the ref had finished blowing the final whistle!

I completely agree with MikeP. Look at last season, 5-0 opening win and we got relegated, maybe this is a good sign. Akinfenwa was sick, he doesn't need to lose weight and looks like he'd be good around the place. His overhead kick was amazing, he's just what Gillingham need. Payne and Nutter were brilliant that match; we did deserve more. I look forward to seeing MacDonald play also. UTG :)

Cheer up Jon!! Yes, the first half was a bit slow but there were young, nervous players out there and they did well!!! Gowling, for me, was great and when the Tank came on - well - what more can I say!! I think we have the makings of a great team!! Looking forward to seeing Oli and Fuller return and to seing McDonald play. It's only the first game remember and we didn't lose!! UTG!! :)

We are in this league on merit Jon.

Take a look at the match stats - 13 corners to 2, double the shots that they had. Gaz is right, we did deserve more.

The biggest thing today was the positivity around the place. How long is it since we all felt that the goal was coming, a win was on the way.

Thought Spiller played very well. Much promise from that squad. We are going up as champions.
