Kent suffer bore-draw against Somerset in LV= County Championship Division 1 as Marcus Trescothick hits an unbeaten 188
Comments |

Kent supporters made their feelings clear to former England
man Marcus Trescothick as Somerset batted through the last day of
the LV= County Championship Division 1 match at Canterbury on
Friday.
Rob Key (pictured), the Kent skipper, was so dismayed at
Somerset’s negative approach that he allowed the whole team, apart
from the injured Simon Cook, to bowl on the final day. Even
wicket-keeper Geraint Jones got in on the act.
Trescothick may have scored his highest first-class score since
May 2007 but the slow hand-clap from the Kent supporters to his
unbeaten 188 was testament to their dissatisfaction at the way the
supposed championship hopefuls went about their business.
Somerset went into the final day with a lead of 146, but refused
to set Kent a run-chase and instead batted on, and on, for a
draw.
Trescothick stayed at the crease for over seven hours and faced
392 balls.
Key, however, did have something to smile about as he claimed
the second and third wickets of his first-class career.
Somerset had batted first and went into day two on 363-7, before
being bowled out for 380 in the morning session. Their last seven
wickets went for just 68 runs, with Azhar Mahmood (3-65) and Amjad
Khan (3-89) the pick of the attack.
Kent quickly slipped to 47-3, however, including the loss of Key
and Sam Northeast in the space of eight balls, both men being
trapped by Ben Phillips.
Martin van Jaarsveld (71) and a career-best 178 for Jones got
Kent up and running, with the hosts eventually ending their innings
just eight runs short of Somerset’s total.
Somerset closed the game out when they declared on 387-7 in
their second innings with off-spinner James Tredwell claiming his
best return of the season for Kent, taking 5-95 in 42 overs.
Nobody, however, could end Trescothick’s never-ending stint
which was greeted with a slow hand-clap from an apathetic home
crowd at the close.
