Brentford 4 Gillingham 0

Charlie MacDonald rifles home his second penalty. Picture: Barry Goodwin

It was another miserable afternoon on the road for the Gills, and the near 1200 fans who followed them to Griffin Park, as they were thrashed 4-0 by Brentford in League 1 on Saturday.

Two first-half penalties - one a certainty the other controversial - began their demise, and two more by Myles Weston added to their problems.

Gills made the better start and Simeon Jackson saw his effort tipped onto a post in the second minute, and Andy Barcham have two more efforts on target.

However, it all started to go wrong after nine minutes. Darren Dennehy's poor back-pass left Charlie MacDonald free and he was brought down by Alan Julian, who had an unhappy return to one of his old clubs.

MacDonald stepped up to blast home the spot-kick, and it was the same story after 32 minutes. Kevin Maher was adjudged to have brought down Toumani Diagouraga in the box and MacDonald rifled home.

Myles Weston netted the third two minutes later, firing home left footed.
Debutant James Walker - who came in for the injured Rene Howe - missed two great chances, the second from just six yards in the second half after the ball came back off the post.

Weston wrapped up the scoring with his second 11 minutes from time when the ball came back off the post, hit Julian and bounced over the line.

Mark Stimson admitted he was "devastated" after the defeat. The under-pressure Gills boss faced up to the jeering Gills fans who were calling for his head at the end and said: "I am hurting badly because I hate losing football matches.

"We came here thinking we had a fantastic chance after three decent results and performances where we showed commitment and spirit, and I thought we had enough to get something.

"We spoke before the game about clearing our own lines and not passing back on a very poor pitch, but didn't take it on board, and concede a penalty to go one down.

"I don't think anyone in the stadium thought the second penalty was one. They got it, and when the luck isn't going with you that happens..

"Brentford are a team who are always in your face, they get it forward and ask questions of defenders, and unfortunately we didn't have the right answers. Josh Gowling and Darren Dennehy have looked solid since they started playing together, but today looked like they have never played the game before.

"You walk away beaten 4-0 and devastated - it wasn't a good day."

Stimson will have his squad in on Sunday morning, but added: "We would have done that had we won 4-0, because we have got a game against Tranmere on Tuesday."

Gills: Julian, Fuller, Gowling, Dennehy, Wynter, Bentley (Rooney 58), Maher, Payne, Barcham (MCammon 75), Jackson, Walker (Weston 58).

Subs not used: Royce, Miller, Jackman, Oli.

Attendance: 6,036.

    Stimson to stay

I don't think Stimson should be replaced. The players we have now are those that will see us through to the end of the season. A new manager will not make a lot of difference. We just need to keep a settled team - why is Wynter playing left back, when John Nutter or Chris Palmer are much more experienced in this role? Wynter is young and has many more years left in him, he should not be playing in a time when we are fighting to stay in the league. Again, we keep changing around our centre back partnership with Gowling (Fry, Bentley, Richards etc.), Dennehey has only had a few games, perhaps when he is more settled then the defence will begin to perform better. Our Midfield also changes rather often, I think we should either have Oli or Bentley on the right and either Barcham or Jackman on the left. Central mid should be Weston and either Maher/Bentley or Payne. Up front Jackson just needs to form a relationship with someone, be it Walker or Howe, but again you can't keep changing is partner game in game out.

I say give Stimson until at least the end of February (we have 3 home games in this time and away ties with Yeovil & Carlisle - both should be at least draws). If we can pick up a total of 9 points in those 5 games, then I think Stimson should stay until the end of the season!

    brentford our rivals not millwall

much is made out of our rivalry with millwall. personally my grudge is with brentford. htye hate us with a passion, all going back to as signing the likes of bob taylor and paul smith from them.

last season we had their totally arrogant manager, ungracious in drawing with us, going to the fa after the match to get garry richards banned, something which is not doen, kind of an unwritten rule. his players weren't exactly angels in that match either.

he sat there in the sky studio for our play off final coverage, slouched back in his chair, arrogant as hell, gloating with his body language. he needs to learn the meaning of the word respect. a wenger in the making, totally ungracious. then to have food thrown at our "manager" saturday was appaling and totally unacceptable. it doesn't matter what the object is, any fan throwing anything whatsoever should be banned for life. i am sure the brentford manager and board will feel this is only minor and justifiable. if it was any other club than us, all hell would be let loose over this, if we were in the premie league/championship it would be all over the back pages.

having said that, stimson is a total joke, out of his depth at this level. by refusing to shake hands with the bentford know it all he has sunk to his level, yet again, and, yet again, has come off second best with the result.

his tactics are non existant, the players do not want to play for him, his substitutions even more bizarre, his answer every time is to go out and replace the players, so we never have a settled side. if we lose tomorrow night he MUST go. we will not stay up with him in charge, with someone else, we might, at the very least it will freshen things up and give everyone a lift. we deserve better than a manager who constantly falls out with players, fans, and blames everyone and everything but himself. as much as i cannot stand andy scott, at least his fans are behind him.

    What a surprise!!!!

I was gutted at todays loss and had really hoped for the first away win!!! I'm really getting disheartened and couldn't bear it if we're relegated again (Wembley is still a fab memory!!!). If you can't do it for Stimson (bye!!) then do it for your loyal fans. Looking forward to a positive attitude on Tuesday when hopefully it will be a 4-0 win to us!!!!!!!!!
