Newport County 2 Welling 2

by Matthew Panting
Welling became only the third side this season to take a point
off runaway Blue Square South leaders Newport on their own ground
on Saturday.
The Wings staged a second half comeback thanks to Tom Whitnell's
brace after they trailed 2-0 when the hosts scored their second
before the hour mark.
Welling went behind in the sixth minute when Danny Rose's
free-kick was touched in by Jamie Collins.
Welling should have levelled just before the half hour mark but
Sam Hurrell somehow turned Luoi Fazakerley's right-wing cross over
the bar from close range.
Newport were denied a second on the stroke of half-time when
keeper Charlie Mitten produced a fine near-post save to keep out
Sam Foley.
But Newport did make it 2-0 on 58 minutes when Craig Reid beat
the offisde trap and set up Kerry Morgan.
Welling were back in it four minutes later when the impressive
Hurrell, playing despite an injury, set up Whitnell and he turned
superbly in the box before finishing past keeper Glynn
Thompson.
Mitten came to Welling's rescue on 74 minutes when he denied
Reid and Welling took full advantage just two minutes later with a
deserved equaliser.
Fazakerley's left-wing corner was never dealt with by the home
defence and Whitnell forced the ball home.
With nine mintues left Hurrel fed Andy Pugh but he was twice
denied by Thompson, while at the other end Lee Clarke cleared off
the line following a Newport corner.
Welling could have grabbed all three points in stoppage time but
Thompson somehow denied them from close range after a goalmouth
meleé.
The Wings are away to Hampton on Tuesday night.
Dorchester v Bromley
Bromley had to settle for a point as they could only manage a
0-0 draw at Dorchester.
Warren McBean missed the best chance for the Lillywhites late
on. He was sent racing clear by Luke I'Anson but never looked
comfortable and slotted just wide.
At the other end, Nick Crittenden came closest for the hosts on
75 minutes but his low shot cannoned back off the post.
Cray Wanderers v AFC Hornchurch
Cray Wanderers moved up the Ryman League Premier Division table
with a home win over AFC Hornchurch on Saturday.
Colin Luckett was the hero for the home side as he got the
only goal of the game after just 13 minutes.
