Danny Spiller ready to decline MLS offer with US side Chicago Fire for Gillingham chance

Danny Spiller believes he played the best football of his career under Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham and the midfielder is hoping to be offered
the chance to link up with him again.Danny Spiller

The 28-year-old former apprentice spent nine years at Priestfield, before leaving three seasons ago to have spells with Millwall, Wycombe and Dagenham.

An offer to play in the MLS in the United States with Chicago Fire came up but transfer restrictions mean that can’t happen until January at the earliest.

He said: "They said they would like to provisionally offer me a contract but they had a full roster. I would certainly put that on hold for the chance to play for the gaffer again."

Spiller added: "Hessy has always been an inspiring character in my career.

"He is the first person I would contact and am just grateful for the opportunity to come and get myself fit.

"It’s been a pleasure to work with Andy, Ian Hendon and my old team-mate Nicky Southall. I have come in and felt at home straightaway and still got a soft spot for the club."

Spiller netted in Tuesday’s win at Dartford and is in the squad for the trip to France this weekend.

Sorry Stuart but when was 'then'? I don't remember him being anything other than a very talented professional who served this club with great pride. His personal life may've been a factor in not realising his potential but who are we to judge him for that? As a footballer, Danny Spiller is good enough to play for Gillingham FC again.

He was poor then and he is poor quality now ... i think its time we started investing in quality again ... we've had all the excuses we need from Scally, its now time to move on and start putting a good squad together ... are we that desperate now that we are calling players like Spiller quality, like most of the Gillingham team at the moment I would not put them in my reserve team ... wake up guys we've put up with rubbish and excuses for to long!!

If Spills coming back increases the amount of females in the stands then it can only be a good thing!

yes, should be OK with certain clauses in his contract

one things for sure, the whole of Kent will be on the lookout for him in local nightclubs!!

if he can buckle down and take advantage of a second chance he could be a very good addition
